Scottish Young Athletes League (SYAL) Final Round, Scotstoun - 23/07/11
Five Caithness athletes helped the Highland and Islands team (team HIPPO) come fourth in the recent Scottish Young Athletes League Final at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow recently.
The sun shone all day as some of the best athletes in Scotland competed in 146 events across the 3 age groups, U13, U15 and U17, competing against teams from Edinburgh AC, Giffnock North, Ayrshire Harriers, Inverness, Kilbarchan, Pitreavie AC and Falkirk Victoria Harriers.
In the U13B age group, promising youngster Imhotep Booth secured the Bronze medal with a fantastic new PB of 4.19m in the Long Jump. Unfortunately he picked up a knee injury on his third attempt.
In the U13G age group, Rhiannon Kirk competed in the Shot Putt and in the 800m race. In the unfamiliar role of Shot Putter, Rhiannon did well to take 6th place with a throw of 4.06m. In the more familiar event, Rhiannon did well to come fourth in the 800m B string race with a time of 2m47.90s.
The U17W age group saw the biggest Caithness contingent with Shannon Eyers, Sarah Henderson and Kate Henderson covering 3 events each, with Sarah and Kate also in action in a relay.
Shannon competed in the Shot Putt and was disappointed to not be in the medals as she threw well below her PB to come fourth in the A string with a throw of 7.09m.
She made amends at the Discus though, securing the Silver medal with a throw of 20.02m, and her second Silver medal in the Javelin with a throw of 29.28m.
Sarah competed in the 100m and for once the wind was blowing in her favour, helping her to 4th place in the B string race with a new PB of 13.61s. She also ran well in the 200m to take 5th place in the A string race with a time of 27.92s. In the 800m B string race, she came 3rd with a time of 2m43.72s.
Kate competed in the Shot Putt and came 2nd in the B string with a throw of 5.70m. In the 300mH, she came 7th in the A string race with a time of 65.40s and in the 300m B string race came 6th with a time of 54.21s.
Kate and Sarah completed the day in the 4 x 300m relay race, helping the team to 5th place in a time of 3m16.17s.
