County Open - Season 2001 - 2002
There was a relatively poor turnout to the Caithness County Open - but the competitors who did manage to compete in the event enjoyed the activities.
The singles were played the day after Carole Mowat's 30th birthday party and there was absolutely no chance that I would be able to turn-up for a look to see who was winning - so, I can only tell you the winners but not what happened.
The mens doubles were a relatively quiet affair
compared to the ladies levels and mixed. For some reason the
women were filled with aggression, fight, power and pure & simple
loudness - but that is to be is expected. These forms of action
are not usually seen on a Caithness Badminton court but the highlight
of the eruptions came in a mixed doubles match between Jane Grant
& John Durrand and Alison Henderson & Ewen Sutherland.
In a tight three setter both couples were desperately trying to finish
this contest. But, midway through the final set Ewen managed to
hit Jane in the face with the shuttle, totally by mistake - but, Jane
took offence to this action, and with her chest arced like a gorilla
ready to pounce on its prey - she came out with a barrage of words
that would have frightened any hard man. After calming down,
they went on to win on the very last point to face Carole & Sean.
