Shetland Inter-County - Season 2002-2003

Good overall performance surprises Shetland.....
Shetland just got the better of Caithness in the annual badminton fixture
between the two areas. The islanders prevailed by seven matches to five in
a closely contested tussle, at Scalloway Hall.
The 12 visiting players were some-what jaded after an early start and were
further handicapped by the conditions in the hall which made it difficult to
judge the flight of the shuttle.
Mark Mackay (with a 'K' not 'C') & James Henderson and Sam Campbell & John Durrand pulled off
expected wins and the third Caithness paring of Davie Nicolson & Benji Mackay
came very close to making a clean sweep in the men's.
The lead Caithness womens' pairing of Casey Sangster and Carole Mowat played
some cracking badminton, including some superbly disguised cross court shots, on
their way to a hard-earned straight sets victory over the number one Shetland
pairing. The other two ladies pairings were slightly taken aback by the
speed and force of the Shetland girls but put in good performances, to lose
in two sets.
Mark Mackay & Jane Grant and James Henderson & Carole Mowat each managed to
win their Mixed Doubles games, Benji Mackay and Marina Finlayson came close to
securing a draw for the Caithness contingent by losing out in the third set and
Casey Sangster and Davie Mackay were unfortunate because Davie had a bit of
trouble with his back.
In all, by the look of the photos below and the excellent result - they all
enjoyed themselves and we look forward to seeing Shetland over in Caithness,
next season.
Thanks to Caroleeeeeeeeeee Mowat for taking the pictures for the website,
much appreciated.

Yell Open
The following day, after a few Lager Shandies and couple of small sherries,
the squad headed for the Yell Open. Oh aye. I Will have to have a
word with a Celtic supporter who was swinging his pants to a Tina Turner song
that the other side seem to have adopted. Sort it out, 'Mr Ooooooh
Rrrrrrrr'.
Anyway, Ratter and Bird won the Mens Doubles, KC and Carole just missed out on
winning the Ladies Doubles and Ratter and Carole won a large entry Mixed
Doubles.
