Invitation Tournament - Season 2004-2005 - 08&09/04/05
Another excellent tournament that gathers players from the length and breadth of Scotland including the islands.
In all, Zoe Anderson continued her excellent consistent form from the previous Shetland Inter-County and Yell Open to win the Ladies Singles against tough opponent Carolyn Young, Edinburgh - two sets to love. The Ladies Doubles with partner Audrey Leask against their toughest pairing Anne Wood & Suzanne Henderson. The treble was secured with a win in the Mixed Doubles with partner Kevin Smith, against Mark Mackay & Carole Mowat in similar circumstances to those in the Yell Open, the weekend previous.
Take this whatever way you want.
Anyone who waited to watch the final of the Mens Singles were witness to a,
and I hope Kevin Smith doesn't mind me saying, a demolition job of power and
precision that you won't see much of up here.
In the past Kevin has always been able to sustain the constant barrage of
commitment given by Mark and usually give out his own, but not this time.
It was like he was possessed, in some sort coma, oblivious to the surroundings
and fully focused on the job in hand to give away as few points as possible
and finish the job, easily. Smashes were coming from angles that even an
octopus wouldn't reach, leaving Kevin running out of ideas early on and didn't
seem to know what to do next, forcing him into errors.
Simply, the plan worked, winning 2-0 and a couple of points each game.
If you were there it is something you can tell your kids about...... OK,
a wee bit OTT - but it was bloody good and excellent to watch up here.
Mark Mackay and James Henderson continued to be the force to be reckoned
with leaving ALL their rivals with the same phrase, ".....no way I'm taking on
a £80000 mortgage and no bike, no way....." and they leave the court.
The made up pairing of Keith 'you gotta be f@@king joking me only two slices
of toast' Donald, Edinburgh and Calvin Reid, Orkney - pushed the pairing in
both games but due to them only been together for a couple of games in this
tournament, spaces were left exposed and the Caithness lads punished them, to
win two nil.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the creation of this tournament, the Royal Hotel and Pammie for taking over DJ duties in my house after the presentations.
