Highland Restricted Tournament - Season 2005-2006 - 18 & 19/02/06

The first Highland Senior Restricted Badminton tournament held in the Dingwall Leisure Centre proved a success with players from as far a field as Shetland and Skye taking part.
Fifty players took part and the Shetland contingent were rewarded for their long journey by three of them returning with winners' trophies. Colin Grant and Jason Jamieson had a battle royal before getting the better of Caithness pairing Sam Campbell and John Durrand, in a three set final.
John Durrand had better luck in the men's singles by beating young local favourite, Paul Carrie in the semi's and then going onto successfully triumph over Neil Anderson, from Forres.
Neil's sister, Julie crumbled in the first set of the ladies' final by only grabbing one point against ex-Shetland star, Suzanne Henderson but got her thoughts together for the other two games and managed secure the title.
Suzanne, joined by her ex-partner, Anne Wood (Shetland) - went onto win the Ladies' Doubles trophy but not without a tough battle against long time partnership, Casey Sangster and Carole Mowat (Caithness). This match proved to be one of the ties of the weekend with the contest ebbing and flowing, leaving the crowd wondering which pairing was going to secure the win. To the watching spectators delight the match went to a tie-break in the final set and it was the Shetland pairing who just had the extra edge in the final couple of points to take the trophy home.
The mixed doubles final brought together another Caithness versus Shetland tie, Carole Mowat & John Durrand against Colin Grant & Anne Wood. As was par for the course in this tournament the tie went to three sets but the Shetland pairing had the extra experience and just nipped it from the young Caithness duo 15-13, in the last set.
Congratulations to all who took part in this new tournament and hope it will continue to thrive in the years to come.
