This season's round of Caithness Badminton Association county competitions
climaxed at the weekend with the annual open championships at Thurso Games Hall.
Numbers were down on last year which meant the mens singles was spilt into
two leagues while the ladies singles and level doubles were played on a
round-robin basis. Only the mixed adopted the traditional knock-out
format. The general view was that despite the low entry, the overall
quality was up.
The mixed event provided a further memorable success for mother-and-son
pairing Isobel and Mark Mackay. Isobel's tight net play and pinpoint
returns of short serves complemented Mark's exemplary court coverage and
consistent shot-making.
They faced Carole Mowat and John Durrand in a three set final.
Isobel and Mark took the first before being pegged back in a tense second.
They raced clear in the decider to repeat their last success of five years ago.
Mark did not drop a set in the singles though he was fully extended in the final
where he got home after two very tight sets versus defending champion John
Durrand. John had revenge in the doubles where he and Sam Campbell
retained their title after edging out Mark and partner Andy Nicolson in the key
round-robin tussle.
Carole Mowat held on to her singles title, with up-and-coming junior Donna
Majilton running her the closest.
Carole and Casey Sangster meanwhile won all their four games to extend their
long run of success in the level doubles.
