Shetland Inter-County - Season 2006-2007 - 12/04/07

Caithness had the privilege of travelling to Shetland this time around for the Annual Caithness v Shetland Inter-County encounter, held in Scalloway Hall but were stifled by a strong Island team who eventually won the tie by 9 sets to 3.

The opening Level Doubles' matches kept the contest wide open with the score sitting at 3-3.

James 'Bird' Henderson and Davie 'Daisy' Swanson grabbed the first point but on a number of occasions the latter had to mention, in no uncertain terms to his partner, 'Calm down and Relax...'. Mark 'Ratter Tup' Mackay and Johnnie 'Le-Bon' Durrand made easy meat of the Shetland number 1 mens pairing and cruised to a 2-0 win.

The final point was taken by Casey Sangster and Carole Mowat against a very strong Shetland challenge of Anne Wood and Morag Fox. It was thought a short time ago that this Caithness Ladies partnership was like a bit of old cheese at the bottom of the fridge, 'going a bit moldy' but in recent matches, against tough opponents, they have looked as fresh as Daisies and there is a certain, may I say - 'girl-on-girl knowledge' of where each other plays with excellent finishing and tactically minded position shots apparent, at all times - with a fitness normally seen in ladies much their junior (must be the drink...). Cha-Cha-Cha.......

Shetland completed their win with a clean sweep of the Mixed Doubles but en-route they encountered tough ties in ALL games and had to battle to secure the title.

Debutante, Megan Ross partnered Daisy and just lost out in the third set 24-22. The pairing led throughout the third set and had the chance to secure a win at 20-19 but Big Whalsay Dinghy driver - Captain Pugwash himself, Kevo Robo (good Tim supporter) played a dream shot across the net (never to be done again) deflating the pairings chances and went on to win. Good stuff.....

Well done to all the Caithness pairings and new players to this event, Martyn Cook and Megan Ross.

Thanks to the Shetland team for the feed afterwards but still not sure what was in that dodgy fish sauce??? Still tasting it....... Also, thanks to the ASBO King, Eric for a party afterwards and everyone that put us up for the night. By the way, Tiger and Anne - Mr Cook will be coming back to play on the drums, he is now called, 'Animal' from the Muppets, get ready...
