'A' team win trophy but 'B' struggle - 14/02/09 (Home)

Caithness Badminton 'A' select are celebrating reclaiming the spoils in their annual tussle versus their counterparts from across the Pentland Firth.

Orkney went into Saturday's match in Wick Games Hall handicapped by a 7-5 deficit they incurred in the first leg on the island.

After edging 2-1 wins in both level doubles, Caithness quickly secured the two mixed contests they needed to secure overall victory.

There was consolation for the visitors in the 'B' match in which they scored a runaway win.

Arguably, the mainland county's top performer was Benji Mackay, whose dynamic, high-tempo play ensured he was one of five home players to secure two wins in the 'A' encounter.

Fittingly, his straight sets success with Wick team-mate Donna Majilton over late call-up Ewan Gray and Kim McIntosh clinched the trophy for Caithness.

Earlier, Mackay featured in one of the games of the day when he and Thurso's Martyn Cook prevailed after an epic three-setter versus Stuart Slater and Gary Nicolson.

After losing the second set, the Caithness combination dug in to take the decider with Mackay's accurate and powerful smashing, more than anything else, swinging the contest his side's way.

The only other three setter involved Thurso duo Pam Bain and Jane Grant versus Kim McIntosh and Caithness exile Kath Bremner.

Early unforced errors meant the home pair were always playing catch-up in the first set but they clawed their way back after taking a marathon second set before winning the decider.

Other Caithness players to win both their matches were Mark Mackay, John Durrand, Carole Mowat and Pam Bain.

Caithness, who trailed 8-4 from the Orkney leg of the 'B' match, under-performed in the return with too many playing below par.

Orkney had comfortably secured the silverware before the start of the mixed contests.

Caithness relied on their juniors for their successes in the 9-3 reverse with Lauren Gunn, from Thurso, winning both her games.
