Shetland Inter-County - Season 2008-2009 - 09/04/09

If variety is the spice of life, then there was no shortage of it on this trip to Shetland - where sad faces were prohibited and tearful eyes with a slight dribble downstairs, from the humour, were the order of the weekend!!!
Caithness travelled on their biennial trip to Shetland for an Inter County match in the Clickimin Centre, Lerwick with a slightly depleted team that anticipated the worst but, who gave it everything for the cause.
Although the overall scoreline showed that Shetland were the stronger and able side, Caithness showed flickers of hope throughout the event.
One of these 'flickers' came from sparring partners, in the red corner - Donna 'Goldie the Hitgirl' Majilton and in the blue corner, Michelle 'No Messing' Cowie, at third ladies' doubles.
The two were first on court, held their nerve and lead the way for the rest of the team by grabbing the first point in a tough three set match.
Caithnesses second point came from the first Mens' match involving Mark Mackay and Sam Campbell versus Colin Grant and Jason Jamieson.
Most people would've thought in these games that Mark would've been the dominant force but, this time round, it was the elder statesman, Sam who matched or bettered his younger partners efforts, in more ways than one.
Sam used his experience, accuracy, quality and grace around the court to baffle the opponents, who eventually submitted to a two nil defeat.
Some of the other matches deserved a little more than the score suggests but, on this occasion, Shetland pulled away to a 10-2 win.
Debutants to Shetland, Thomas Sutherland, Peter Sangster and Donna Majilton produced worthy performances and the water has been well and truly tested for these competitors to return to Shetland.
Once again, congratulations to Shetland, thank you for the hospitality and look forward to your appearance in Caithness, next year.
