Intersport (Gorn) Open, Kirkwall, Orkney - Season 2009-2010 - 06&07/11/09

Mark Mackay returned with a hat-trick of trophies from the Intersport-sponsored annual open badminton tourney in Orkney at the weekend.

Mackay, from Rattar Mains, Scarfskerry lost just two sets in completing a clean sweep at the event at Kirkwall Grammar School at the weekend.

He was one of nine from Caithness who took part in the competition which attracted a record entry.

Mackay's domination started in the singles when he defeated Gordon Keith, from Shetland, in straight sets in the final.

The female title went to Shetland's Shona Keith who overcame promising Orkney junior Rebecca Reid in the final.

The two individual champions proved an unbeatable combination in the mixed, breezing through to the final where they defeated Shetland duo Colin Grant and Ann Wood.

Mackay partnered county colleague James Henderson to victory in the level doubles.

They had a tough three-setter versus Orkney's Ewan Gray and Gary Nicolson before the final where they came up against Shetland twins Graham and Gordon Keith.

The Caithness pair won the opener before being edged out in the second and then powering home to win the clincher.

Caithness pairing Pam Bain and Jane Grant played well to reach the semi of the level doubles where they went down in two sets to Shona Keith and Ann Wood.

The latter went on to prevail in the final where they won two well-contested sets versus Casey Sangster and Carole Mowat.
