Caithness Junior Badminton - Season 2010-2011
Under 15 Championships, Thurso & Wick - 06&08/12/10
Caithness Badminton Association's under-15 championships went ahead last week at the second time of asking.
Postponed from a fortnight ago because of snow-bound roads, the singles were held in Thurso High's games hall on Monday and the level and mixed doubles in Wick High's games hall on Wednesday.
Nearly 40 from four clubs took part in the two evening sessions which produced some cracking contests.
Kayleigh Ross came through a clutch of tough matches to emerge as the only undefeated player.
She defeated fellow Wick club member Katie Cunningham to retain the singles title which she won last year as an under-13.
After breezing her way to the first set, Kayleigh was edged out in the second set before powering back to clinch the decider.
The duo then teamed up to secure the level doubles, defeating Wick's Shannon MacKenzie & Emma Plowman in straight sets in the final.
The surprise package of the championships proved to be Wick's David Black who partnered Kayleigh to victory in the mixed.
Their opponents in the final, Shannon and Cameron Young had featured in an exhausting three set semi versus Katie Cunningham and Matthew Sinclair.
The final was also an epic with the latter pair taking the first set and within a point of taking the title in the second.
Kayleigh and David held their nerve to come through 22-20 before prevailing 21-17 in the third.
Players from the west of the county featured in the boys' singles and doubles.
Dunnet's Michael Stone took the title after defeating Kyle Tait, from Thurso, in the final in straight sets.
Kyle had earlier come through two very tough games against club-mates Sean Campbell and Adam Higgins.
The level doubles title went to Wick's Cameron Young and Craig Muir who showed a good appreciation of each other's play.
They defeated Sean and Craig Wares in their semi before going on to beat Kyle and Matthew Sinclair in a two set final.
