David Allan Shield - Round 1 - 24/06/08
A comfortable win at home to the Acks sees us advance to the next round of the David Allan Shield. Both teams were missing a few first team regulars, with one of ours being Poop which meant that Gunny had to don the gloves for the game. The result was never really in doubt after we took the lead after five minutes. Spike was played through for a one-on-one with the keeper and as he challenged for the ball the rebound fell to Blocks at the edge of the box, whose shot was blocked by a defender. The loose ball landed nicely for Spike though and he tucked the ball away into the bottom corner. We continued to enjoy most of the possession early on and doubled our lead about twenty minutes in. Good work by Bainer down the right hand side saw him get to the bye-line, where he looked up and picked out Spike who finished high into the net. We could've made it three and put the result beyond doubt shortly after, but Stevie C put a free header from a Gavin free kick wide.
It wasn't all one way traffic though, and Gunny had to look lively on a couple of occasions and pulled of a couple of good saves and the visitors also hit the bar. Half Time 2 - 0 Both teams struggled to get going in the second half and it wasn't the best of games with little action at both ends. Gunny tipped a long range effort round the post as the Acks tried to get back into it and Muttley hit the post direct from a corner at the other end. Although we looked comfortable for most of the second half, we couldn't really settle until we got a third and the crucial goal finally came with about twenty minutes to go. Rusty was just on the park for a matter of seconds when seized upon a short back pass and expertly lobbed the keeper from 25 yards or so. This proved to be the end of the scoring and the game finished without further incident. A reasonably comfortable win against a pretty young Acks team. Gunny did well in goals in Poop's abscence and although it wasn't the best of performances, it was effective and we got the job done. It will be good to get a decent run in this competition as it's our last chance of success this season.
