League Division 1 - 14/07/08
A great win for the Wildcat's and a vital three points against our main rivals in the battle for Division 1 survival. Despite the good performance in our last game against JOG, Nige made some changes to the line-up with Gavin, Muttley & Gunny replacing the ill Stevie C, the suspended Blocks and Duck who was dropped. We needed to make a good start to the game and after a strangely subdued opening five minutes or so, we took the lead with one of our first real efforts on goal. Muttley played the ball into the box and Luke got free of his marker at the back post to steer the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net. This was just the start we were looking for and it wasn't long before we doubled our lead. Gavin burst into the box in the inside right channel and although he dragged his shot a little, it found it's way to Adamson at the back post with a tap-in from a yard out. Unbelievably though, he somehow managed to play the ball back the way it came and it fell to Bainer who made no mistake from all of a foot out. We were now flying and cutting through the visitors defence at will. Rusty was denied by a fine save, Luke went close with a header, Kitten was trying his luck from distance but we were unable to get the killer third goal.
We started to get sloppy, let Acks back into the game and Poop had to look lively to pull off two great saves shortly before the break but managed to get in at half time with the two goal lead still intact. Half Time 2 - 0 We made a very sloppy start to the second half and it looked like we hadn't learnt our lesson from the end of the first period and we continued to look flat and sluggish. It was no real surprise when Acks got on the scoresheet when they scored a fine goal which left Poop with no chance. We were rattled slightly and their tails were up as they sensed they could get something from the game. We then scored a fantastic goal against the run of play which gave us a boost and knocked the stuffing out of them. Bainer ran onto a bouncing ball about 30 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable volley into the top corner. This goal galvanised us, raised our game and we went onto dominate the rest of the game. Great work down the right hand side by Luke saw him get to the bye-line, he picked out Rusty just inside the box, cut inside his man and curled a neat finish into the bottom corner to make it four.
The visitors' frustration became apparent and they were reduced to ten men shortly afterwards. Muttley almost scored shortly after but his effort came back off the post after he had beaten a couple of defenders. He did get his goal though and it was all down to the great running of Kitten. He skipped past a couple of challenges down the right hand side, when he got into the box he looked up and picked out Muttley unmarked at the back post and he beat the keeper with a smart finish. We could've gone onto score more and Bainer probably should've claimed a hat-trick, Tarpot had a goal chalked off for offside and that proved to be the end of the action. Another good performance as we maintain our recent fine run of form to secure a crucial three points in our quest for survival. This win now puts us in a good position, although we are by no means safe and have to continue to put in the same amount of effort and commitment for the remaining games.
