Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009

Eain Mackintosh Cup - Round 2 - 02/06/08
Castletown 4 - 1 Halkirk

A disappointing exit from Maca's cup for the team but one that was maybe expected, if I'm being honest. We were hoping to build on the good win against Dunvegan but were once again hit by a number of call-offs as Neillie had to do without a total of 8 players!

It was a very depleted squad that made the trip to face the Quarrymen and very much a patchwork team that took to the field. We struggled to get out of our own half for much of the opening 45 minutes as the home team dominated possession and created a few good chances but were kept at bay for the most part by Poop.

They did take the lead just after the half hour mark following some poor marking.

Half Time 1 - 0

We had to make another enforced change at the break as Pockets was taken to hospital suffering from concussion following a head knock and this stretched the resources further.

We continued to compete the best we could but were three behind by the hour mark. We never gave up though and continued to battle away and got a goal back when Rusty released Spike and found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

We should have got another one back almost immediately when Gunny missed a header at the back post and we were then denied what looked like a stonewall penalty following a hand ball in the box.

Just when we thought we were back in the game, the home side put the result beyond doubt with a fourth. This proved to be the end of the scoring although Poop did produce some good saves, including a quite memorable triple save which drew warm applause from the spectators behind the goal.

A very disappointing result and a blow to get knocked out of Maca's Cup but getting league points is our priority and what we need to concentrate on.

We will hopefully be able to call on a much stronger squad for our next game against the Swifts. In saying that, all three youngsters who came in - Banksy, Matthew & John Mowat all showed up well and can be pleased with their contribution.

Go Wildcats's!!
