Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009

League Division 1 - 30/07/08
Castletown 3 - 1 Halkirk

Our league campaign ends with another defeat against the Quarrymen. The squad from the trip to JOG was further depleted with Poop away on holiday and Bainer injured. Spike returned from suspension and Foubie returned to the fold to help us out.

It was a great night for a game and the condition of the pitch in Castletown meant it was a pleasure to play on, compared to the JOG park in our previous game.

We made a decent start to the game and were matching the home side in what was a pretty even contest.

We fell behind midway through the first half when they scored with a neat finish following a smart passing move but almost got back on level terms immediately after the kick off but Luke's shot was well saved at the near post.

Neither team created any further clear cut chances and the stand-in keepers on both sides were relatively 'un-worked'.

Half Time 1 - 0

We fell further behind just before the hour mark when a dangerous ball from the right was headed into the net at the back post.

Our heads didn't go down though and we pulled one back pretty quick. Gavin picked out Stevie C at the edge of the box, he beat his man before drilling a cross-shot across the face of goal and Banksy forced the ball in from a couple of yards out, showing the type of predatory instincts his old man was famous for.

We almost got a second soon after but both Foubie and Spike were unlucky with back post efforts following another set-piece delivery from Gavin.

Just when we were really starting to get on top, they scored a third which proved to be a killer goal. Yet again it was a well worked goal and a great strike from the edge of the box which left Gunny with no chance.

There was very little goalmouth action for the remainder of the game and the ref blew the whistle to bring our 2008 campaign to an end.

A reasonably good performance from the team despite missing a few first choice players. We played some good football at times and guys that haven't been getting much of a chance throughout the season came in and put up a good display.
