Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009

Highland Amateur Cup - Round 2 - 31/05/08
Halkirk 4 - 0 Dunvegan, Skye

A good win for the Wildcat's sees them progress into the third round of the Highland Cup.  Once again, short of a couple of players but this didn't affect us too badly as we made the most of the good conditions to see off our visitors from Skye with a comfortable win.

We started the game very well as it looked like the Dunvegan boys were struggling to shake off the effects of their early start and long bus trip.

We took a very early lead when Charlie broke down the right and his cross into the centre was controlled by Spike, who turned and powered a shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

It wasn't too much longer before we doubled our advantage. A wicked delivery from a corner by Gavin was headed into the net from close range by Bainer.

We continued to dominate for much of the opening half hour and Luke was extremely unlucky not to score when he rounded the keeper but he hit the inside of the post and the ball rebounded back into the keepers hands. He then hit the bar as we went looking for the third goal that would've put the game beyond them. The goal didn't come though and our workrate and performance level dropped for the final fifteen minutes of the first half and we allowed the visitors back into the game but although they were starting to enjoy a bit more possession, they never really looked like scoring.

Half Time 2 - 0

We knew that if we could get a goal early then it would put the result beyond doubt but we made a very sluggish start to the second 45.

We didn't pass the ball about like we had been doing and found ourselves under a bit of pressure. We did get the third though and it came against the run of play.

Great play by Bainer on the right hand side saw him beat 2 or 3 men before he switched the play to Kitten who was breaking in from the left.  He got a run on his marker and expertly lobbed the keeper from about 20 yards or so. That goal deflated the islanders and more or less finished the game as a contest.

We scored a fourth not long after, when Gavin beat the keeper with a 'piledriver' from the edge of the box. That completed the scoring although we really should've scored more and Muttley could even have had a hat trick after coming off the bench. He went close on a few occasions and had what looked like a good goal chopped off for offside.

A really good win for the boys with a few goals scored and a clean sheet for the defence. We maybe should've scored more goals than we did but that would've been harsh on the Dunvegan lads who felt that they had done enough themselves to get a goal or two. They possibly had a point too on their performance around the break. We played some good stuff though and the opening half hour was the best football we've played this season and hopefully we can take this form into the league for the rest of the season.

Go Wildcat's!!!
