Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009

Highland Amateur Cup - Round 1 (Replay) - 17/05/08
Keiss 1 - 4 Halkirk

The Wildcat's get their first win of the season as we secure our passage into the second round of the Highland Amateur Cup following a hard fought replay in Keiss.

Again, missing a few players and travelled with a slightly depleted squad but we started the game very positively and were almost ahead inside two minutes when a Gavin Bremner free kick beat the keeper but rebounded back off the post and Duck & Rusty seemed to get in each others way when trying to force in the rebound.

It wasn't long though until we took the lead and it was pure route one football. The ball was laid back to Poop and his long clearance went straight through the heart of the home defence, where Luke latched onto it and calmly beat the keeper with his one on one effort. This gave us a real boost and we played really well for the first half hour of the game but couldn't increase our lead. The home team forced their way back into it before the break, went close with a header and had a penalty claim waved away by the referee.

Half Time 0 - 1

After our sluggish end to the first half, we didn't start the second any better and were soon on level terms.

Poor defensive play left Poop slightly exposed and he was left with no chance of keeping out their effort. We were now at sixes and sevens, struggled for the next ten minutes and Poop made a couple of vital saves to keep it all square before we finally worked our way back into it and started to dominate proceedings, again.

Luke was denied by their keeper on a few occasions and Bainer was really starting to look menacing as he started to see more of the ball.

We then took the lead with a little over 15 minutes to go. Bainer won a free kick about 25 yards out after a run that beat 2 or 3 players and Gavin promptly stepped up to power the dead ball into the top corner to leave the keeper with no chance and silence one or two of his critics in the home support.

We scored out third almost immediately to make the game safe. A great run down the left flank by Kitten saw him get to the by-line, before he cut in and picked out Bainer inside the six yard box who made no mistake and finished high into the net.

The scoring was completed in the final minute when sub Pockets scored with a well placed header.

A really good win for the lads and great to score a few goals at last. The first half hour and the last 20 minutes were excellent but what went on in between wasn't good enough and needs to be looked at. We were able to keep our heads up when struggling and continued to play some decent football which should be looked upon positively. The fact we finally scored a few goals in a game will hopefully give us confidence for the upcoming league games before we return to HA Cup action with a visit from Dunvegan from the Isle of Skye.

Go Wildcat's!!
