Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009

League Division 1 - 21/07/08
Halkirk 2 - 2 Wick Groats

The undefeated run continues but this was very much a case of two points dropped as this was a match that eBiGH dominated for long spells.

We did make a poor start to the game and found ourselves behind inside five minutes when we conceded a goal from a rather hopeful punt over the top of the defence and Poop was left with no chance.

We got back on level terms almost immediately, when Kitten scored a fine goal.  He picked the ball up around the halfway line and evaded a couple of challenges before finding the corner of the net from 25 yards.

This goal gave us a boost and went onto create several good chances in the first half.

Luke was unlucky on a couple of occasions, the first when he was released down the left from a superb ball by Bainer but hit the post and the second did well to control a free kick from Gavin but pulled his shot wide.

The best chance of the first 45 fell to Casper after Muttley picked him out with a clever header, but he was leaning back, got his shot away but it went over the bar.

Half Time 1 - 1

The second half continued in pretty much the same way as the first. It was really a question of when we would take the lead as we had the majority of the ball and the visitors weren't really troubling our defence.

We eventually took the lead just before the hour mark when Gavin scored with yet another trademark free kick into the top corner.

The remainder of the game saw us fail to increase our lead due to a combination of good saves, poor finishing and poor decision making. Luke had a couple of decent efforts, Bainer was denied by the keeper, Muttley was unlucky with a shot but could've done better with another chance.  Rusty came off the bench to go close a couple of times and his fellow sub Tarpot was unlucky not to notch his second consecutive brace with a couple of good efforts but was also guilty of a pretty glaring miss late on.

Even then though, we were still rarely tested at the back but were hit with the preverbial sucker-punch right at the death. Some confusion in the back line with the active / inactive offside rule saw us at sixes and sevens in our own box, with Poop off his line he was lobbed from the edge of the box and despite Spike's valiant overhead attempt at a clearance, the ball crossed the line for an equaliser that Groats didn't deserve.

There was barely time for the game to be restarted and that proved to be the final league action on Recereation Park this season.

Another good performance overall with plenty of positives but also some negatives to be taken from it.

We played some really good football at times and dominated the match for long spells. However, we should've scored at least six goals and need to become more clinical in front of goal and should also have shown more experience in closing the game out as we looked to push forward late on rather than keep the ball and protect the lead we had.

Go Wildcat's!!
