Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009

League Division 1 - 23/05/08
Halkirk 1 - 2 Wick Rovers

Yet another defeat for the boys but this one was particularly hard to take as we conceded two goals in the final six minutes of the match.

Once again, Neillie was forced into making changes to the team due to player unavailability for one reason or another. It seems to be par for the course that we can't have a game without being short of 4 or 5 players.

Despite the personnel shortage, we more than matched the visitors who were in buoyant mood having put four goals past the Stabs in their last away fixture.

The first half was one of few opportunities with Adamson having our best efforts on goal with a couple of long range shots going quite close. At the other end, the most Poop really had to deal with was high balls into his box although he was beaten once following a corner but Gav popped up with a great goal-line clearance to keep the score level.

Half Time 0 - 0

The second half was very much the same as the first as it was an even contest with little goalmouth action.

The longer the game wore on, the more we were pushing and putting the visiting defence under pressure.

We enjoyed the majority of the possession in the second period and finally took a deserved lead with about twenty minutes to go. Adamson did well to keep a ball in play at the bye-line and his cutback found Kitten, who in turn teed up Gavin Bremner who found the top corner with a great strike.

We should've been able to hold out for the remainder of the game but couldn't and they were awarded a penalty with six minutes left, which they duly converted to level the match.

Unbelievably, they then scored what proved to be the winner almost immediately after the kick off. We failed to clear a cross into the box and the loose ball was fired into the net.

A defeat we didn't deserve and one that was certainly hard to take after conceding so late against the Groats earlier in the week.

We played well in the game and deserved a draw at the very least but to lose all three points was a bitter pill to swallow.

It looks like it's going to be a relegation battle for the remainder of the season but we have to take the positives from the last few games and react in the right manner to this defeat.

Go Wildcat's!!
