Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2009-2010

League Division 1 - 22/04/09
Castletown 1 - 2 Halkirk

Our season got off to a great start with our first league win in Castletown for quite a number of years.

We were well up for this game from the start and could've gone ahead in the opening minute but Charlie was fouled in the box by their keeper and despite everyone at the ground waiting for the penalty to be awarded, the ref controversially decided that the keeper had managed to get a touch on the ball.

We were undeterred by this though, continued to dominate most of the play and took a deserved lead.

Brenda rose well to knock down a corner and Charlie showed a great poacher's instinct to fire home the loose ball.

We failed to increase our lead in the first half though despite enjoying the majority of possession and Charlie posed major problems in the home defence.

Half Time 0 - 1.

The home side were much improved after the break and the game was a more even contest, although we continued to play well.

The hosts did, however, draw level around the hour mark when they netted from a powerful free kick that left Gunny (in the goals due to Pies being away on holiday) with no chance.

In years gone by, this might've been the cue for a collapse but this just galvanised the side and we got ourselves back on top before grabbing a deserved winner about ten minutes from time.

We were awarded a free kick and with everyone expecting a flighted ball into the box, Gavin went for goal and expertly found the top corner to embarrass the home keeper.

There was still time for C-Town to create a final chance but Gunny produced a tremendous save to secure the 3 points.

A great start to the season and a thoroughly deserved victory. We can only hope that we can maintain this level of performance and commitment throughout the season.

Go Wildcat's!!
