Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2009-2010

League Division 1 - 27/04/09
Halkirk 1 - 3 Wick Groats

A disappointing result for The Wildcat's as we failed to build on our great opening day win over the Quarrymen.

We started the game in a positive manner and Charlie created an opening for himself inside the opening minute but failed to take advantage.

Groats started to try and impose themselves on the game but it was the home side who took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

Brenda made a break from his own half, beat a couple of men and just when it looked like he had lost control of the ball, showed great desire to win a 50-50 and the ball broke to Mikey. His first time ball set up Charlie and, this time, made no mistake with a guided left foot effort into the bottom corner.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it got for us as we struggled to play any decent football and allowed Groats to dominate play for long spells.

Gunny, who had kept his place in goal, produced a tremendous point blank save to maintain our advantage but was still beaten twice before the break.

The first came after he again saved well but the rebound fell to the attacker who buried the loose ball. A bit of indecision from the keeper then lead to their second as he headed a clearance, rather than catch it after he slightly lost his bearings. The striker was still left with a fair bit to do but expertly found the top corner.

Half Time 1 - 2

The half time team talk didn't have the desired effect as we started off just as poorly and Groats always looked the more dangerous side.

They should've increased their lead inside two minutes but somehow missed an open goal from inside the 6 yard box as the deficit remained at one goal.

Despite being only a goal behind, we failed to show any real urgency in our game and struggled to play any sort of decent football with no-one really looking to pass the ball.

The result was put beyond doubt with about 15 minutes to go when Gunny again made a one-on-one save but saw the ball rebound to the attacker to score with the follow-up.

We did have a couple of near things in the second half but nothing that really threatened their keeper, they were able to see out the remainder of the game and secure a deserved 3 points.

An extremely disappointing defeat and an unacceptable performance compared to last week in Castletown.

We will perhaps realise now that we have to do more than just turn up to win a game and must put in 100% effort, get back to playing football and start creating & taking chances.

Go Wildcat's!!!
