Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2009-2010
League Division 1 - 25/05/09
Halkirk 4 - 0 Wick Rovers
It's back to winning ways for the Wildcat's with a convincing victory over Rovers.
Nige was able to select from a pretty much full strength squad and the return of Bainer & Stevie C to the side was a big bonus.
We were a little sluggish at the start of the match and it looked like a few of the team had been overdoing the celebrating on Helicopter Sunday!!!!!
After a pretty even first twenty minutes, we started to impose ourselves more on the game and Bainer tried his luck with a couple of long range efforts but failed to test the keeper. But, he was called into action to make a fine save to deny Kitten.
We did take the lead around the half hour mark from a corner kick.
Mikey drilled the ball over and Bainer was up like a salmon to bullet his header into the back of the net.
The lead was doubled shortly afterwards as Adamson got his first goal (and probably only) of the season.
His first shot from just inside the box was blocked but the rebound came back to him and he made no mistake with his second attempt finding the top corner.
This spurred the visitors into action and they had what looked like a decent penalty claim turned down. However, if they felt aggrieved at the ref's decision, they soon had reason to be thanking him as he turned down a stonewaller as Charlie was taken down in the box after a mazy run that left 3 defenders in his wake.
Half Time 2 - 0
We maintained a good level of performance in the second half and it was really a question of how many we could score as we were relatively untroubled at the back but whatever they did throw at us it was dealt with comfortably by Brenda, Gavin and the outstanding Swandog who seems to be getting better with every game.
Adamson almost scored again but his effort hit the post and Mikey fired a free kick over the bar.
We did make it three though and once again it was that man Bainer with an almost carbon copy of the opening goal.
He was up at the front post, hanging in the air like Michael Jordan and directed his header past the keeper.
It should've been four shortly after but Charlie somehow missed the target from about two yards.
He wasn't to be outdone and grabbed a deserved goal after being put through by Kitten, got clear of the defence and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.
Matthew was on for a run now, did well to beat the keeper to a loose ball and then to stay on his feet after being caught by the keeper but we were unable to convert his centre.
Young Butch then had his chance to get on the scoresheet when we were awarded a penalty kick but he dragged his shot wide of the post.
Rovers had a goal disallowed for offside late on and Pies made a great one-on-one save as he looked to keep an all important clean sheet to boost his confidence.
A vital win for the team as we finally get back to winning ways in the league.
It's been a long time coming but hopefully now we can go on a wee run, starting with our trip over the water to Dounby in the Highland Amateur Cup on Saturday.
It was a much improved performance but there is still plenty to be worked on.
Go Wildcat's!!
