North Caledonian League - History (If you know the...)
The below information was taken from a match programme edited by Ken Wood and sponsored by North of Scotland Newspapers for the Halkirk United FC v Wick Academy FC, North Caledonian League match on May 11 1994. This was a league winning debut season for HUFC and it was to be Wick's final match in the North Reserve League before adoption in the Highland League.

The present North Caledonian Cup competition is the direct descendant of the North of Scotland Junior Cup which started in 1888 and the original trophy is the one the teams still play for. The League Championship began in 1896 with Nelson (8 titles) and Citadel (5 titles) the most consistent of the early winners.
In 1948 the league became the North of Scotland 2nd XI FA and reserve teams from Inverness - clubs, Clach, Caley and Thistle and from other Highland League clubs Forres, Nairn and Ross County were in league competition against Corinthians and Muir of Ord. The Highland League reserve teams continued dominate until the late sixties apart from one championship win in 1964/65 for Avoch Rangers. Then Dingwall Thistle began a new trend by winning the league in 1970/71 and 1971/72.
Wick Academy joined the league in 1972 and finished in a creditable fourth place behind champions Easter Ross, Dingwall Thistle and Golspie Sutherland and ahead of Bunillidh Thistle (Helmsdale), Invergordon, Tain St Duthus, Ross County 'A', Bonar Bridge and wooden spoonists Black Rock (Evanton) whose 18 match record comprised of 2 draws and 16 defeats. A reorganisation of the Easter Ross club saw them win the 1973/74 season as Alness. Other champions during the seventies were Golspie Sutherland 1974/75 and Dingwall Thistle 1977/78.
Wick Academy won four successive titles from 1978 to 1982 and their fifth success came in 1987. Meanwhile, the trophy had gone to Bunillidh Thistle in 1983, Muir of Ord in 1984 and 1986 and Fort William in 1985. Invergordon were champions in 1988, Bunillidh in 1989, followed by Balintore in 1990 and 1991. Clachnacuddin were successful in 1992, then Golspie Sutherland won the title in 1993.
1993/94 saw the league now sponsored by Highland Recruitment expand to sixteen clubs with the intention of splitting next season into two divisions.
Newcomers Halkirk United and centenaran Wick Academy set the early pace much to the satisfaction of followers from both the East and West of Caithness. The first local derby between the sides on an early season Wednesday evening drew a large crowd to the Harmsworth Park to witness a 1-0 win for Academy.
Clachnacuddin and Ross County occasionally threatened to mount a challenge but when Clach won the match between the two at Victoria Park on March 19 only to lose the following week at home to Invergordon, the challenge from South was all but over. With a few matches postponed Academy's challenge also lost its momentum and they lost away to Ross County 5-0, and bottom club Dornoch 1-0, but with games in hand they could not be written off as the league season entered its final phase.
