Close friends Pam Bain and Carol Paterson played a very exciting match in the final of the Ladies' club championship in Reay after comfortable wins over Ruth Shallcross and Carole Cameron in their respective semis. Carol started the final well, dropping only one shot to par over the first four holes to go three up with Pam struggling to find her best form. Pam managed to grab one back at the fifth but let things go slightly at the long sixth allowing Carole to regain her three shot lead. The seventh was halfed and Pam pulled back again at the eighth after Carole had a bad approach shot. The ninth was shared with Carole going into the next nine holes two up. The next three holes were halved but Pam slipped up at the 13th allowing Carol get closer to the title. Pam managed to claw her way back in the final holes but Carol had numerous chances to secure the title and take the trophies home to her family. At the eighteenth, Carol's putt to lift the title just nicked the edge of the hole but stayed out - meaning it was an extra hole to be played. With the first hole being re-played Pam's tee shot was just short of the green while Carol scampered away to the right. Carol could only manage a bogey and Pam lifted this excellent matchplay contest with a par. picture from John 'O' Groat Journal Reay Ladies' Handicap Championships - 31 August 04 In the final of the Reay Ladies' Handicap Championship, Pat Owen had the advantage of five strokes' handicap allowance over Helen Williamson. Not to be outdone, Helen played steady golf and was two up after nine holes. Pat rallied at the 10th and looked to be getting back into the match but Helen hung onto win at the 15th - four holes up with three to play. The weather was perfect, the company most amicable and both Helen and Pat proved the success of the 'Tuesday Girls'. August Medal - 26 August 04
Thurso Ladies Open - 21 August 04 The Thurso Ladies' Open was sponsored by Nuclear Technologies plc whose representative, Agnes Ross, presented the prizes. The course was in very good condition but the stiff breeze made scoring difficult for some of the 45 ladies who played. The handicap trophy was won by Laura Simmonite with a 68, followed closely by youngster Donna MacKinnon (Durness) on 69. Third place went to Elaine Davidson (71), with Anne Simmonite fourth on 72 and Orkney's Hazal Gray fifth (75). In sixth place was Reay's Ruth Shallcross (77) and Aileen Simmonite was seventh with 78 (BIH). The scratch trophy was won by Eileen Manson (78), with Audrey Dunnett second (83) and Wick's Doreen Mackay third on 88. report from John 'O' Groat Journal Captain/Vice Captain Prize - 12 August 04
Reay Mixed Open - 08 August 04 It wasn't only the golfing abilities of the 25 pairs who took part in the Reay Mixed Open that were put to the test recently, but also their abilities to stay calm in the face of adversity. On a day when winds reached near gale force at times and tempers probably blew just as hard it was only those with patience, sheer rugged determination and an element of luck that made it to the winners' rostrum. With every pair having a "tail to tell" on what might have been and with scores higher than expected it was a surprise that any couple could play to their handicap. However, Bill McIntosh, of Reay, with Isobel Kirkpatrick, from Thurso, managed to do just that and return a nett 70.5 to lift the handicap trophy, with their playing partners Lyn and Andy Whitelaw returning a nett 75 for second place. In the scratch section, by virtue of a better inward half, Colin and Carol Paterson beat arch rivals Andy and Pam Bain who both returned gross 85. Other prize winners were Alan Proudler and Issy Currie, Chris Hobson and Carole Cameron, Mike Browne and Helen Williamson, Tim and Susan Hawes and Steve Effemey and Julie Murray. The event was sponsored by engineering consultants Babtie. The prizes were presented by Babtie's Ian Henderson and his wife Helen.

Ladies Open - 10 July 04 Forty four Ladies turned out on Saturday for the Reay Ladies' Open. Although there was no sun to be seen, it stayed fine for most of the day. A contingent of a dozen ladies from Stromness ventures over the water for a weekend of gold and, more importantly, apres-golf. The best score of the day was 79 which belonged to the very consistent Eileen Manson and the best handicap score was 69 by Tricia McDonald. This was a great score as Tricia managed to take 10 on the 14th by taking a trip to the garden at Mary's Cottage only to find her ball three inches out of bounds. The rest of the field were close on their heels and everyone had a super day. The event was sponsored by DM Geddes & Sons and the Bank of Scotland provided gifts.

report from John 'O' Groat Journal Captain's / Vice Captain's Match - 03 April 04 Thirteen ladies and Chris(tina) Hobson played in this start of the season fixture. Rhoda led her Pesident's team to a close second place against Issy's babes. Weather was good for the time of year and everyone enjoyed the golf, the crack and the refreshments.
Winter 2003/2004 This has been our busiest winter for a number of years. Ladies have played regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as competing in the Monthly medal and Goblet every other Saturday. The weather has been kind and very few sessions were unplayable. The greens-staff were often surprised to see us out there but we'll do anything to avoid the housework! Many thanks to Roger and Co for all their hard work on the course throughout the winter months. We do appreciate it even though we moan about the increased difficulty in getting out of some of the bunkers! Diane Loughborough's hole in one at the 18th, Helen Williamson's continuing improvement to a handicap of 36, and a closely fought winter eclectic were the highlights. We were sorry to lose Margaret Welsh when she and Peter moved back down south. We were all saddened by the death of Donald Sutherland and heartened to welcome Rhoda back to her golf towards the end of March. The following summarises the winter results:-
