The July Medal doubling as the third Qualifier for the Club Championships had a lot at stake for most of the field as many had only one qualifying score in so far. It was not the most inspiring of days with grey skies and a fine misty rain which did dry up as the day progressed. Scoring was excellent in Division One and birdies were plentiful whilst Division Two struggled to keep pace.
George MacDonald began with a fine birdie at the 3rd and the match of David R.Craig playing with John Disbury saw both birdie the par three 3rd hole for excellent two's each. Only one golfer in Division Two managed to break par. Scoring was a bit high with Bill McIntosh getting third place with 89-16-73 which included a fine 'chip in' birdie at the 16th from the front apron, however it was a good round blown with two eights on the card and one being at the par three 18th. In second place for the medal was Andy Whitelaw back from offshore and playing steadily to return 85-13-72. On his own in first place was the old maestro Danny O'Hagan down the middle as always to get the best gross score of 83 and also a fine birdie at the 16th to go under par with 83-15-68 and a comfortable win to claim the Division Two July Medal.
In Division One sparks were flying and birdies galore dropping as seven players broke par and two equalled par. Most notable on the birdie trail was John O'Brien who scored three 2's on his card at the 5th, 15th and 18th. A brace of birdies went to Gavin Sutherland at the 15th and 17th, also Bob Earnshaw with a pair at the 12th and 16th and Alistair Gunn doubling up at the 3rd and the 5th. Getting in on the birdie bonanza was Club Captain Graeme Dunnett at the 16th, and Raymond Taylor 72-3-69 also at the 16th who shared the lowest gross of the day of 72 with Don C.Mackay. The 5th hole was yielding birdies and two's fell nicely for Lee Parnell, Cammie Ross and Ian Ritchie.
On level par was Donald Mowat with nothing too exciting with 78-9-69. Richard McDonald playing nice and steady managed 75-7-68 and with the same score was Murdo MacDonald making a pitch at the Scratch Championship and sneaking in a birdie at the 14th for 79-11-68. Sandy Chisholm had back to back birdies at the 12th and 13th in his round of 79-12-67 and Steve Lucas also going for glory had a great score of 78-12-66 but sadly that didn't even make the top three.
In third place with an outstanding Eagle at the 6th was Don C.Mackay 72-7-65 sharing the lowest gross of the day with Raymond Taylor. Don also tucked away two birdies at the 16th and 17th with a putter which was hot and a score which would have won on most days. Pushing Don into third place by courtesy of the count back was Joe Wilson in blistering form since making his comeback to competition with an impressive 77-12-65. The winner of the July Medal was Bruce Mackay with 75-11-64 and now only point one away from a coveted single figure handicap. Bruce has been playing consistently well in all Competitions this year and thoroughly deserves all the accolades for capturing the Division One July Medal.
