September Medal - 17 September 05
Canny Danny proves he can do it

The September Medal was played in typical Caithness weather with a good breeze blowing from the west making life difficult. The CSS for the competition came in at 69 and as usual when the wind blows this way the second hole plays the hardest giving up a very mean single par to the field on the day. The course only gave up 7 birdies.

Life was tough in Division two and only Danny O'Hagan made a birdie which fell at the 9th for a nice two. Picking up third place was George MacDonald with 97-20-77 and winning yet more sweep money. Back from Offshore was Andy Whitelaw making second place his own carding 87-13-74. Winning the Division Two medal with the lowest gross of 84 and the only man to break par was Danny O'Hagan with 84-16-68 and a clear winner by six shots. Danny had a neat card but three ugly sevens marred what could have been an outstanding card in the conditions and as Peter Alliss always says a birdie two always helps smarten up the score.

Life was also tough in Division One and young Gavin Sutherland was battling away well to birdie the 6th. Gavin Gunn made a nice pair of birdies as putts fell for him at the 3rd and also the 6th. Dad Alistair Gunn was not to be left out and he made birdie at the 8th. Andy Mackay still feeling the effects of his broken ribs put in another gritty performance with an 81-11-70 to edge out Alistair Gunn on the countback and secure third place.

John O'Brien had the lowest gross score of the day with a 74 and a tidy birdie two at the ninth for his card of 74-5-69 making the only nett par of the day and securing the second berth. John went out in level par figures of 34 for the front nine but had 5 bogeys on the back nine slipping to a total of 40. In a class of his own and at last coming good after a long summer winning the September Medal in Division One was Colin Stewart who managed a birdie two on his card at the 7th a very difficult par three. Colin had equal halves of 40 but showed good control in the wind to hold it together to get the only par breaking score in the Division and run out a clear winner.
