Forty Five golfers contested the Reay Seniors Open in good golfing conditions with little or no breeze and so it was quite a surprise to find the CSS out at 70. Over 50% of the field in Division 2 signed the card Norman Roberts which was disappointing as the course was not that difficult without the wind blowing. There were only five birdies, also a surprise, but D.Brims and S.Busby both from Wick GC sank putts on the 9th for birdie two's. George MacDonald from Reay also birdied the 9th. Only two visitors didn't nil return and they were Alf Williamson (Thurso GC) with 102-19-83 and H.McLean (Wick GC) with 97-18-79.
Terry Grace of the Reay Club secured third spot with 94-22-72 as home players totally dominated Division two. Danny O'Hagan had an outstanding birdie with a classic text book sand save at the 15th to hole for a birdie two from quite an impossible lie. This helped Danny to second place with 87-15-72 pushing out Terry Grace on the countback. Peter McCartney had the lowest gross with an 80 and a tasty birdie at the 6th hole setting up superb figures in a class of his own 80-13-67 to comfortably win the Reay Senior Open title in his debut year as a Senior Golfer and also the distinction of being the only golfer under par on the day. Congratulations to Peter who is the Senior Open Champion Golfer for 2005 and who also achieves his ambition of getting into Division One with some surgery now applied to his handicap. The new target could be a single figure handicap?
Meanwhile in Division One there was also much huffing and puffing. Club President Alf Mackay set the ball rolling early in the day with a birdie at the 3rd. Sandy Chisholm and Bill Budding both had birdie two's at the 15th and Ian Ritchie finished strongly with birdies at the last two holes but sadly had already surrendered to the course. Donald Jack (Thurso GC) had the lowest gross of the day with an impressive 75 which included a birdie at the 11th.
Don C.Mackay one shot behind Donald on 76 was the only golfer on the day to make par and won Division One with 76-7-69. Four tied on nett seventy and once the dreaded countback was applied we had Murdo MacDonald in second place with 81-11-70, Donald Mowat got the nod for third on 78-8-70, Jock Eunson secured the fourth berth with 80-10-70 and Donald Jack of Thurso GC broke the home domination of scoring with 75-5-70.
