The Annual match for the Split Stone Trophy was played on Monday when players from the East locked horns with the lads from up West. The trophy is a replica of the Split Stone a well known local landmark. The Captain's this year were Alistair Gunn from the East and Bruce Mackay from the West. The father and son pairing of Alistair Gunn and Gavin Gunn drew first blood despatching of the West pairing of Bruce Mackay and the veteran David Mackay in the joust between the Captains. Don Mackay and new member Wayne Mowat took on the young guns from the West Andrew Crawford and Gavin Gunn in a match with birdies galore. Wayne Mowat made birdie on the 8th and Don contributed with a birdie at the 13th. Young Gavin pulled off a birdie at the 14th and an uncharacteristic three putt on the 18th meant the young guns triumphed for the West. East pairing Don Mackay (Jnr) and Terry Grace were two up quickly on Alf Mackay and Murdo McDonald. Young Don was only 8 feet away on the 18th to hole out for a birdie and pick up the nearest the pin prize generously donated by Gavin Gunn. Meanwhile, Alf and Murdo had clawed back to earn an honourable half. Jim Frew and Hugh Miller raced into an early led for the East against Gerry Devine and Bob Earnshaw but on the back nine were unable to win a hole and eventually succumbed to superior firepower. Ian Ritchie a previous West Captain paired with Cammie Ross took on Chris Hobson and John Disbury and they were two up with three to go but Hobson and Disbury took all three holes to get a win for the East Team. John O'Brien and Peter McCartney settled for an honourable half with George MacDonald and Kenny Farmer. Keith Buxton and Callum Mackenzie managed to overcome Willie Williamson and Kenny Farmer (Jnr) however the final score was the lads from the West sneaked in with a victory by four points to three. The Split Stone trophy was presented to Bruce Mackay the winning Captain by the tournament organiser Evan Sutherland. Thanks to Mrs Irene Sutherland and Jimmy Gibson who fed and watered the teams.
