Summer Cup Round 10 - 05 July 05
Good J'O'B by John

Round ten of the summer cup exploded into a scoring frenzy as scores verged on the ridiculous improving as the day progressed. Out early was Bill McIntosh navigating through the rough to set up 83-16-67 partnering Danny O'Hagan doing the simple things right like keeping the ball in play with fine straight driving to return a score of 82-17-65 and what should have been a comfortable winning score. Andy Whitelaw with a birdie at the 18th and playing in the worst of the weather brought home 81-13-68. David Craig playing in his first Club Competition impressed with a birdie at the 6th and Eric Tram-Taylor bidding farewell to the Club in his last Competition before going back to exile in Lincolnshire left his mark with birdies at the 3rd and the tough 7th.

The nonsense began later in the day starting with Colin Earnshaw and a steady 82-13-69. Next up with a birdie at the 12th was Peter McCartney on 79-15-64 to get ahead of Danny O'Hagan. Then we had Grant Coghill learning from his experiences in the Reay Open and how to keep out of trouble getting a birdie at the 11th and the lowest gross in Division 2 going one better with 77-14-63 and securing the lead. Then seemingly out of nowhere came Simon Spencer right at the end of the day with the light fading fast to post a magnificent 89-27-62 and a major pruning of his handicap to win Round 10 of the Summer Cup.

In Division 1 we thought scores were more sensible but they joined the party as well. With the greens in superb slick condition and the course looking absolutely fabulous birdies were dropping everywhere. The 14th was popular as Murdo MacDonald was first to birdie. David Mackay birdied 6th, and Gavin Sutherland not at his best notched up a brace at the 12th and the 14th. Two's came in from Andy Mackay at the 15th and Richard McDonald at the 9th for a 76-7-69. Cammie Ross finding a bit of form again birdied the 5th and the 14th to make par with 80-11-69. David Gray also birdied the 14th with 80-12-68 to pick up third spot.

John O'Brien still smarting from his failure at the Reay Open put the record straight with a great scratch score of 70 the best of the day. John had a treble birdie spree with birdie putts dropping at the 3rd, the 8th and the 14th to score a very nice 70-5-65 and second spot to himself. The last threeball on the course coming in out of the murky gloom saw Donald Mowat match John's triple with birdies at the 3rd, 6th and also the 14th. 'Mojo' as he is better known, also with a point to prove after the Open did so in fine style shooting 72-9-63 to snatch first place in Division one. The Course is playing very difficult just now and the rough is unforgiving and costly, but it proves the old adage if you keep it on the short stuff and make the greens you can still score well as Round 10 of the Summer Cup goes down in the record books noted for very low scores.

Golf this weekend for the Gents means contesting Opens at Thurso and Wick whilst The Ladies look forward to the Reay Ladies Open where late entries will be accepted.
