Summer Cup Round 11 - 12 July 05
Evan & Alf grind them down

Round eleven didn't quite match up to the giddy heights of last week but there was still some good scoring and birdies dropping. Flavour of the day this week was birdie 2's and the hole which was favourite moved from the 14th to the 5th. Getting down for a birdie two at the 15th was Bill McIntosh on the way to creating a great score but suffering a severe bruising as he crashed to a 10 on the 17th but still managed 4th place with a nett 71. A birdie also for Colin Earnshaw at the 3rd hole got him off to a good start but clearly not himself giving in to a no return and thoughts drifting to the titanic battle looming on Friday in the Matchplay Quaich when he crosses swords with his father. This could be an epic duel with an early psychological blow in favour of the old man.

Danny O'Hagan was first to get a birdie two at the 5th and he followed up with another two at the 18th for a good steady round 87-13-71 and third place in Division 2. Both were excellent birdies sinking long 15 foot putts. Alan Paul also managed a birdie 2 at the 5th and then tamed the difficult 17th with a splendid birdie to return 81-13-68 for second spot. Appearing from an apparent summer hibernation came Club President Alf Mackay with the lowest gross score of 79 and a cool birdie at the 6th to break par comfortably with 79-13-66 and wins Division 2 with plenty to spare.

Division 1 saw Les Patrick also birdie the 5th for a two but he too pressed self destruct and faded quickly out of contention. David Mackay another not at his best birdied the 16th but at least he returned a score albeit one to forget. Gavin Sutherland playing steadily birdied the 16th and Steve Efemey fresh from Caddying duties in the Ladies Open notched a birdie at the 13th for 81-11-70.

Lee Parnell made a welcome return to form after crashing out of the Black Isle Open at the weekend bagging three impressive birdies and a healthy gross 73. Birdies for Lee came at the 3rd, 6th and the tough 11th contributing to third place in Division 1 with 73-6-67. Runner up on the day and now regularly making the lowest gross with a 72 today was the quiet man from the west John O'Brien who knows how to shoot a birdie or three. John had two 2's and these came at the 5th and the 7th and a further birdie at the 14th for a very smart card and 72-5-67 getting ahead of Lee on the countback. Winning Division 1 was Evan Sutherland with nothing spectacular but simply grinding out the pars in Nick Faldo mode and good course management to return an excellent gross of 75 and a card of 76-9-66. Evan is setting the pace in the Summer Cup league building an impressive set of consistent scores.
