Summer Cup Round 13 - 26 July 05
Gavin & Alan grab best rounds

Summer Cup 13 produced a CSS of 69 with some outstanding scores and a lot of disappointing scores. In Division 2 birdies were hard to come by and it was great to see that gritty old competitor Jim Frew sneak a birdie two at the fifth and Willie Young get the only other birdie with a birdie two at the picturesque 9th hole. Danny O'Hagan regularly picking up the sweep money these days did it again for third place with 87-15-72. Willie Young finding form and playing well grabbed second place with level par figures for 95-26-69 and will be confident of a further handicap reduction before long. With the lowest gross in the Division of 79 Alan Paul had a sparkling round, no birdies but a run of fine pars and steady play to win Division two with 79-13-66 and was the only man in the Division to break par.

In Division One we had some stunning play and a very competitive evening with Bruce Mackay getting a triple birdie spree at the 5th, 10th and 12th. The par three 5th yielded up birdie two's for Stephen Lucas and Andy Whitelaw coping well with playing in Division One for the first time. Joe Wilson broke par with 79-11-68 becoming a nice regular habit and pushing the leaders. John O'Brien surprisingly only had only two birdies at the 6th and the 16th for 72-5-67 for a very tidy round. Edging out John on the count back was Donald Mowat (Mojo) who had back to back birdies at the 5th and the 6th returning a fine round of 76-9-67 to secure third spot.

Two players were tied on nett 64 a truly excellent score and a shame to separate them. The seasoned veteran campaigner Fred Groves made three lovely birdies with two two's at the 5th and 15th and a good birdie at the par 5 fourteenth hole. Two's really do smarten up a card but unfortunately Fred had to settle for second spot on count back with 71-7-64. The honours fell to the young pretender Gavin Sutherland with four magical birdies at the 12th, 13th, 15th and the 16th. Gavin shot the lowest gross of the evening with a 70 beating Fred Groves on 71 and John O'Brien on 72 to shoot 70-6-64. In such fine form Gavin will be having a beady eye on the Club Championship and realistic hopes of success and he will be hard to beat with the confidence of youth on his side.
