Summer Cup Round 15 - 09 August 05
Willie or won't he - he did...

Round 15 of the Summer Cup saw atrocious weather conditions and this reflected in a poor entry but there were still plenty worthies willing to face the elements. The morning was not too bad but the afternoon and evening saw persistent rain.

Golfers in Division two were really struggling and only Danny O'Hagan made a birdie which was an excellent two at the treacherous seventh hole. It was obvious life was tough when Bill McIntosh secured third place with 94-16-78 not the best of scores but good enough on the day to be in the frame. With the lowest gross of 87 in the Division Danny O'Hagan was back in the money again and 87-15-72 saw him home in second place. Willie Williamson picked a poor night for a decent round and his efforts saw him came home first in Division 2 with a sound card of 92-22-70 to secure the sweep money. The rest of the field probably want to forget the trials and tribulations of the day.

In stark contrast Division one saw some excellent scoring and a few wonderful birdies. David Mackay set the ball rolling with a birdie at the 4th the longest hole at 581 yds. Birdie two's fell nicely for David Gray at the 9th and Murdo MacDonald at the 15th. Young Gavin Sutherland found the conditions difficult but still managed a brace of birdies at the 6th and the 12th.

Recovering from the exertions of the Stromness Open Bruce Mackay made par and had two birdies with putts falling for him at the 9th and the 16th. Breaking par was Peter McCartney with 79-11-68 also with two birdies at the 13th and the 16th as he played the back nine in an impressive 35 shots. Andy Bain and Cammie Ross both coming nicely into form to challenge for the Thurso Open had super rounds and tied on nett 67. Cammie Ross was the birdie king with a red hot putter and notched up three in his round in a great front nine going under par at the 3rd, 5th and the 6th for figures of 77-10-67 getting third spot. Andy Bain got the nod on the dreaded countback and had the added distinction of scoring a rare eagle at the par five 6th hole 'Braid's Choice'. Andy carded 79-12-67 and got the second berth.

The winner of Division One was Donald Mowat affectionately known as 'Mojo' to the golfing fraternity and he was certainly in a class of his own with a stunning nett 62. Scoring the lowest gross of the day a superb 70 in unfavourable conditions he also had back to back birdies at the par five 14th and a cheeky little two at the 15th. Halves of 36 and an under par 34 on the back nine was excellent shooting for 70-8-62 a score too hot for anybody else to compete with and also in great form for an assault on the Thurso Open at the weekend.
