Scoring for this round of the Summer Cup was excellent and is reflected in the CSS of 68 however Division 2 scoring was high as most of the players in Division 2 golfed in the morning and were unfortunate with the weather which was very poor. By the evening conditions had improved significantly and were ideal for golfing. This round also doubled up as round two of the Strokeplay Championship.
Danny O'Hagan 90-18-72 continued his comeback to competitive golf after a long lay off with injury to get in the money again birdying the 13th and picking up third place in Division 2. A display of consistent straight hitting off the tee finding most fairways in the conditions was impressive. Also struggling in the rain was Andy Whitelaw 84-13-71 another good score with the lowest gross. The in form Peter McCartney 85-15-70 was at it again with a good birdie at the 4th into the prevailing wind and a tidy card in very unpleasant rain but nothing to an ex Navy man used to wet conditions. Peter wins round 7 of Division two.
Fireworks and birdies galore in Division 1 saw three players tie on nett 69 led by David Gray 81-12-69, closely followed by John O'Brien 75-6-69 and a quality birdie 2 at the 15th and equalled by club stalwart Evan Sutherland 78-9-69 but Evan's birdie 2 came on the 18th. Young Gavin Sutherland 73-5-68 continues to improve and looked mightily impressive off the tee with back to back birdies at 13th and 14th and the distinction of the lowest gross of 73 and at only 16 years old has to have a great future ahead of him. Oh to be young again and have that swing!
Raymond Taylor 75-5-70 had four birdies on the evening at 4th, 8th, 11th and 13th but a careless double bogey at 16 and a dropped shot at 17 spoilt the card and a really good score. Gavin Gunn 78-11-67 fresh from victory in the Reay Gala Open proved he is competitive and steady, no birdies but tidy figures and this time losing out on count back to get 4th place. Steve Efemey 79-12-67 sneaked third place and the sweep money with a birdie 2 also at the 15th hole.
66 appears to be a winning number at Reay and yet again we had a count back to separate the two best scores. Bruce Mackay 76-10-66 in a rich vein of form and scoring consistently under par had two birdies at the 2nd and the 5th. Sandy Chisholm 78-12-66 bagged his second 66 in recent weeks dropping only one shot to par on the back 9 and claim victory to prove there is still life in the old dog yet. What ever he is taking we all want some.
