Summer Cup & Strokeplay Championship - Season 2005 - 2006
Summer Cup Round 8
& Strokeplay Championship Rnd 3 -
21 June 05
Round 8 of the summer cup saw the full panoply of the variations in weather found on a traditional links. The morning saw ideal conditions with some rain developing into howling winds through the day and subsiding into idyllic seaside conditions in lovely summer sunshine with glorious sunsets by the evening. The CSS for the competition was 69. George MacDonald up with the larks in the morning set the early standard with an 89 - 22 -67 which nobody could match to comfortably win Division 2 as Dossie's Dyke the intimidating 17th ended many rounds. The lowest gross in the Division went to Alan Paul with 82 and two birdies at the 6th and the 16th to return 82 - 13 - 69. Willie Williamson although producing a no return got the only other birdie with one at the 16th. In third spot both with net 74's came Andy Whitelaw 87 -13 - 74 and Bill McIntosh 89 - 15 - 74. Bill looked to be having a tidy round till he found the trap on the 18th and ran up an abysmal 8. Unfortunately he doesn't smoke so the Hamlets were no use. Scores in Division 1 were not much better with two notable exceptions and again the 17th claimed a few more scalps. Gavin Gunn struggled after recent heroics but managed two birdies at the 6th and the 13th. Andy Bain also managed a tidy brace at the 14th and the grandstand birdie at the 18th. Birdies also came from Lee Parnell 14th, Colin Paterson 14th, David Gray 15th, Richard McDonald 9th, Bruce Mackay the showman at the 18th and Les Patrick at the 16th. Bruce Mackay playing well and in contention for the Strokeplay Championship and the Keoltag Salver let the pressure get to him and pressed self destruct on the 17th with 5 off the tee to run up a gruesome 9 and make his challenge more difficult. The field struggled and many failed at the 17th. Willie Steven 80 - 11 - 69 playing conservatively slipped into third place on his own on par figures. The lowest gross of the day of 72 came in from Raymond Taylor getting back to his best form with a stylish performance 72 - 4 - 68 and birdies at the 6th and 13th setting up second place and a clear lead in the Strokeplay Championship. Pride of place goes to Evan Sutherland the run away victor 74 - 9 - 65 despite ugly double bogies at the 2nd and 11th Evan snapped up a birdie at the 6th and held his nerve with equal halves of 37 and ground out the pars to claim the spoils. A very tidy set of figures indeed and becomes the bookies favourite for the Keoltag Salver.
