Summer Cup Round 9 & Strokeplay Championship Rnd 4 (Finale) - 28 June 05
The Great Raymondo waves magic wand to win Strokeplay title

Tuesday was the culmination of the Strokeplay Championship and only eleven golfers survived the four rounds.

Raymond Taylor showed excellent consistency throughout the four rounds to secure the trophy and Gavin Sutherland will be kicking himself that he lost two balls in the third round, which halted his chances but this is the not the last we will see from this young up-and-coming golfer.

Final positions:-

  1. Raymond Taylor - 73, 75, 72 & 72 = 292
  2. Gavin Sutherland - 73, 73, 78 & 72 = 296
  3. Evan Sutherland - 75, 78, 74 & 77 = 304
  4. David Mackay - 74, 77, 79 & 75 = 305

The Keoltag Salver, the handicap competition to the Strokeplay championships, had an early pacesetter in Bruce Mackay but unfortunately for him he slipped away in rounds three and four, which was a shame as he was setting a blistering target for the field to aim at.

The clear winner of the Salver by a grand margin of eight shots was Evan Sutherland. This is the fourth time he has managed to get his name placed on the trophy and a visit from the Club secretary.

Final positions:-

  1. Evan Sutherland (10) - 65, 68, 64, & 67 - 264
  2. Raymond Taylor (5) - 272
  3. Gavin Sutherland (5) & Andy Bain (12) - 276

Summer Cup 9 was played in excellent conditions as the scoring and CSS of 68 bore out. In Division 2 birdies were hard to come by and only Bill McIntosh managed a birdie which was at Braid's choice the par five 6th hole. The rough on the course is growing in now and so accuracy off the tee is paramount to avoid punishment. The lowest gross score of the Division was achieved by Grant Coghill who returned an 82 - 15 - 67. The Par of 69 was also broken by Willie Young 94 - 26 - 68 and Bill McIntosh with 83 - 15 - 68. At last returning a card it was well worth waiting for, and it's been a long wait, came Willie Williamson 88 - 22 - 66 to get third place. Willie was pipped on the countback by the wily old fox Danny O'Hagan with 84 - 18 - 66 who claimed second making a welcome return to competitive golf and a move up the rankings in the order of merit.

Division 1 produced a plethora of birdies with Steve Efemey bagging one at the 11th, Fred Groves at the difficult 17th, Murdo MacDonald with a two at the 9th, Ian Ritchie making it at the 13th, Andrew Crawford sneaking a two at the 15th, and a brace of birdies for Lee Parnell at the long 4th and the 16th.

It was nice to see Joe Wilson celebrate his come back to golf making par with 81 - 12 - 69 including notching up two birdies at the 3rd and the 14th in his first round for some time. Playing partner David Mackay (5) matched the 69 and slipped in a birdie two at the short 5th. Evan Sutherland playing his best golf for some time produced 77 - 9 - 68 to make a regular habit of breaking par in recent weeks.

The lowest gross of the day of 72 was shared by Raymond Taylor going out in 36 and coming back in 36 and Gavin Sutherland also crossing swords in the Strokeplay championship with Raymond mirrored the two halves of 36. Raymond had a birdie at the 16th and scrambled well with some untidy play but still had a good score of 72 - 4 - 68 to come in under par again.

In third place with birdies at the tricky 11th and the 16th playing steadily was the quiet man John O'Brien to make 73 - 6 - 67. The ever improving Gavin Sutherland equalling the lowest gross of the day seemed to like the par 5's as he birdied two of them, the long 4th the Sahara and Mary's Cottage the 14th to secure second place with 72 - 6 - 66. The winner with a display of long straight hitting was Jock Eunson joining in the birdie feast at the 4th and engineering a workmanlike 75 - 11 - 64 to take pride of place.
