Alliance (Reay) - 26 February 06
Ronnie continues to lead

The fixture was played in what can only be called perishing conditions with a stiff breeze and everybody got caught in at least one shower. Nevertheless the field of 67 golfers produced 32 birdies between them. The fourth hole proved to be the hardest with only three pars on the day and the second only gave up three pars. The easiest hole was as usual the short 5th.

The only man in Division two to get a birdie was John Harper (Snr) of Wick at the 14th with the lowest gross going to David Gray of Reay with an 81. Ian Mackintosh of Reay in his first outing with the Alliance picked up fourth place with 99-27-72 just edging out young James Taylor of Wick who carded 90-17-73. David Gray of Reay had 81-11-70 and did enough for second place at the expense of Alf Williamson of Thurso who had an 89-19-70 courtesy of the dreaded countback for third place. Top spot in Division two and winning the balls was young Bryan Suttar of Thurso on 89-20-69 and the distinction of being the only man to make par figures, a very commendable effort on the day.

In Division one Jim Meiklejohn was in good form recording four birdies with the putts dropping at the 3rd, 13th, 15th and the 16th in his round of 79-6-73. Don Mackay had the second best gross score of 76 and picked up birdies at the 13th, 16th and 18th which was a great effort considering he racked up a very ugly 10 at the 14th. A par would have been good enough for best gross. The old seasoned campaigner Ronnie Taylor once again showed his class in tough conditions getting the best scratch score of 72 and maintaining his one shot advantage over Munro Ferries of Tain for the trophy. With Munro absent with the North District Ronnie was unable to extend his lead but he did get a nice birdie at the 13th. John Hunter from Wick had a double with birdies at the 14th and the 16th. Mike Sangster of Tain also had a double birdie haul at the 3rd and the 6th but fell away on the back nine.

Fifth place in Division One went to Thurso Member Jim Meiklejohn who despite his haul of birdies couldn't improve his position. Steven Cowie also from Thurso carded 78-6-72 for fourth place which included a birdie treble with an impressive two two's at the 5th and 15th and a birdie at the 6th. A relative newcomer to the Alliance is John Nicolson of Reay and he made his mark with 80-9-71 and a birdie at the 6th to make third place his. Russell Budge of Lybster made par with 76-7-69 with a birdie at the 16th and that gave him second place. The only man to break par in either Division was John O'Brien with a super scratch score of 73 and birdies at the 13th and 14th in his final 73-5-68 and first place.

All in all a successful fixture for Caithness golfers spread nicely around the four clubs as they dominated all the prize positions not allowing any representation from the Sutherland lads who found the going tough. The next round of the Alliance card will be at Brora next Sunday.

Alliance Teams (Brora) - 11 December 05
Thurso team lift Brora event

A seven iron strike straight into the hole for an eagle two at Brora's second hole by Thurso's Stevie Cowie elevated his team mates Peter O'Hare and Doug Mackenzie to first place in the Alliance three ball, better ball competition.

A second two on their card was contributed by Peter at the sixth hole for a count of 21 for the outward seven holes, and then Doug with a two shot allowance at the 17th got a birdie three for a total of 46, over the 15 holes played and a one shot win.

From the early start of second in the field of 25 teams the Brora club president Ken Lorimer, his secretary Tony Gill and Bonar Bridge/Ardgay's Seann Sutherland lead the tournament with a 47 until edged out by the Thurso winners.

The Brora/Bonar combination matched the Thurso outward card of 21 with the help of a nett eagle from Sutherland at the fifth hole, but with all three of them receiving a stroke at the 17th the best they could do was a nett par.

A second Thurso trio, Walter Rutherford, Davie Irvine & Alan Mackenzie, got third place with a score of 49 after their birdie two on the final green won the countback against a Helmsdale trio of Ronald Sutherland and brothers Graham and Martin Grant.

Two scores of 50 were also separated on the inward eight hole count and the birdie three on the 17th was decisive for Durness's trio Francis Keith, Lachie Ross and Alistair McCowan over Reay's Bruce Mackay, John O'Brien and Cammy Ross.

Alliance (Reay) - 04 December 05
Birdies galore for Ferries

Despite the threat of rain the fixture was played in excellent conditions for the time of year. The first 3 ball out at 8.20am found it a bit gloomy and by the afternoon there were some nice blue skies and those that didn't travel must be regretting the decision losing the opportunity to get a qualifying score in. We had a field of 66 which produced a total of 44 birdies and found the 8th hole as the most difficult on the day, with a slight tail wind the 16th gave up 8 birdies and the 13th produced 5.

The scratch section was won by Munro Ferries of the Tain Golf Club who produced a magnificent haul of 5 birdies breaking par at the 2nd, 5th, 8th, 15th and 17th in a superb round of 70. Munro went out in 31 which is 3 under par and would have been looking at a potential record breaking round but sadly came adrift at the 13th where he ran up an ugly 8 in an otherwise immaculate card. Birdies at the 15th and 17th went a long way in repairing the damage on the back 9 in a quality round of golf from a handicap of plus one. Munro certainly enjoyed his visit to the Reay links.

Ronnie Taylor from Wick was also in the thick of the fray with birdies at the 4th, 14th and 18th but dropped a couple of shots on the front 9 in a commendable round of 71. John O'Brien from Reay with a brace of birdies at the 4th and the 16th kept up the home challenge producing a creditable 72. Lee Parnell of Reay and Mike Sangster of Tain both managed 73's with Lee getting a pair of birdies at the 7th and 10th and Mike with birdies at the 12th and 16th. Alistair Gunn of Reay had a 75.

In the handicap section in Category one Reay Golfers had a stranglehold of the top three places. With a score of 75-8-67 Alistair Gunn came out on top after the dreaded countback and nice back to back birdies at the 9th and the 10th. Alistair came home in 36 shots only one over par. John O'Brien went out in 34 but struggled with a few bogeys on the back nine which cost the top spot but still carded 72-5-67 a very good score. Maintaining the Reay grip at the top with 73-5-68 and a great effort was Lee Parnell who sank a massive putt at the tough 7th for an outstanding birdie. He certainly celebrated in style with an Olazabal style dance on the green. Picking up a prize also was Mike Sangster of Tain in fourth place on 73-3-70 and his two birdies on the back 9 edged out Scott MacDonald into 5th spot on 77-7-70. Bob Robertson of Thurso on 76-6-70 lost out on the ball sweep on the countback.

In Category two Thurso Golf Club claimed the glory with an unusually good score from Alf Williamson claiming the spoils with 83-19-64 and a run away victory. Four players shared the second best score of nett 69 and the countback had to be applied to separate them. In second also from Thurso was Doug Mackenzie with figures of 97-28-69. Winning third spot was young James Taylor of Wick playing with the old man Ronnie and showing his father there is another winner in the family on 86-17-69. David Gray from Reay with the lowest gross score in the Division and a wee birdie at the 11th was awarded fourth spot with a card of 80-11-69. Shaun Ashe from Brora picked up the fifth berth with 81-12-69 and had a nice birdie at the 13th.
