Eclectic 6 (Final Result) - 25 March 06
Last round was a wash out

The winter Eclectic is played over 6 rounds and round six sadly was a washout with nobody returning a full card as the constant rain annihilated the field. Nevertheless there were plenty good scores in and the results were very interesting. The best score on a hole over the counting rounds qualifies for the gross score and then three eights of handicap is applied to get a final nett score.

The seasoned veteran Ian Ritchie claimed 5th place with a gross score of 68 less 3.38 as his handicap giving him a total of 64.62 as a final nett eclectic score. Lee Parnell and John O'Brien also had gross 68's and Donald Mowat had a par score of 69. Fourth berth was claimed by Steve Efemey also on a gross 68 but a final 64.25 as his nett.

Bruce Mackay had to be in the frame somewhere and he also finished with a gross 68 but his handicap of 4.14 brought him in on 63.86 and third place. Colin Stewart capped a good winter campaign also with a gross 68 and less his handicap of 4.50 he finished runner up on 63.50.

The surprise winner with a handicap of 2.63 and a superb gross score of 66 with four birdies giving a winning score of 63.37 was David Mackay. Better known as Snapper David will be more surprised than anybody else as he has not had a great winter but clearly saved his best rounds for the Eclectic to come out a very popular winner and picks up the Jean Mackay trophy.

Eclectic 5 - 25 February 06
Kenny only person to break par

Scores are getting tight in the eclectic and there are a number in the frame. Conditions were fine but the temperature was very cool and that made life difficult nevertheless the field managed 15 birdies. The 13th was the easiest hole giving up no less than 6 birdies and strangely the 6th came out as the hardest.

John O'Brien didn't get any birdies but did return the best scratch score of 77 with Lee Parnell just behind on a 78. Sandy Chisholm did however get on the birdie trail with success at the 9th a nice two, the 13th and another two at the 18th for a haul of three birdies. The 13th got a pasting and birdies went to Fred Groves, Andy Bain, Tom Sinclair, Alistair Gunn and young Brent Munro. Murdo MacDonald was in form with a pair of birdies at the 2nd and a wee two at the 15th. Further birdies went to Don C.Mackay at the 17th, Gavin Sutherland at the 15th and Danny O'Hagan at the 16th.

Third place needed the countback to be brought in as there were two on nett 70. Ian Ritchie lost out and had to settle for 4th with 79-9-70 and after a recent birdie streak failed to make any birdies but still a very respectable card. George MacDonald got off to a flying start with a superb birdie two at the first hole and birdies are very hard to come by on this tough 235 yard opening par 3 where most are very happy to just make par. George captured third place with 90-20-70 and a huge smile after the first.

John Disbury is coming into a fine vein of form with a late winter season assault and with 89-20-69 took second place and was the lone player to make par. Out in 43 and back in 37 for 80-13-67 and the only score to break par was Kenny Farmer. This was a popular win and Kenny threw in a birdie at the 16th for good measure to put some added gloss on a very fine round.

Eclectic 4 - 28 January 06
John clicks into place

Eclectic round four threw up an interesting change in the names in the frame. The second once again came out as the hardest hole to play closely followed by the fourth and the short 5th was the easiest. There was a grand total of only 14 birdies and four of these were at the 8th hole.

One of the usual contenders John O'Brien was having a tough day at the office with the only highlight in the round a two at the 15th. Andy Bain wasn't faring much better but managed a birdie at the 8th. Lee Parnell strangely out of contention also managed to birdie the 8th. David Mackay was also struggling with form but managed a brace of birdies with putts falling in for him at the 5th for a two and the 13th. Sandy Chisholm made a rare appearance and secured a nice two at the fifth. Andrew Crawford back for a break from University made his mark with a birdie at the 17th.

New boy John Nicholson is beginning to get to grips with the course and it won't be long till he starts to make an impact but settled for two birdies at the 6th and the 8th in an impressive front nine but the wheels came off on the back nine. Colin Paterson dusted the cobwebs off his sticks and made a very rare winter appearance with a birdie at the 10th as a reward. Colin Stewart slotted home a fine putt for a birdie at the 12th.

Club Champion David Dunbar comfortably scored the best gross of 75 and threw in two birdies at the 6th and the 8th for an excellent outward 36 and came home in 39 to take 5th spot with 75-6-69. Also on 69 was Alex Mackay who edged out David on the countback with a nice tidy par round of 86-17-69 for 4th place. The sprightly old salt Mike Browne was in great form navigating his way round very steadily to pick up third place with figures of 91-23-68 to end up one under par.

Ian Ritchie edged out Mike on countback carding halves of 39 and 38 in his round of 77-9-68 to take second place. He should have saved last weeks three birdies for the eclectic. Pride of place goes to John Disbury who has plugged away all season and now is rewarded with a first place and a card reading 87-20-67 which is a great win and can now bask in the glory of being three under par with an outstanding birdie at the 13th. Good course management kept the big numbers of the card and John is a popular winner as it all came right on the day.

David Mackay is a strong bet for the Eclectic trophy having the best gross of 67 over the four rounds played with four birdies. Once handicaps are applied Colin Stewart leads the way with nett 58 but hot on his heels are Steve Efemey, Bruce Mackay and of course David Mackay.

Eclectic 3 - 17 December 05
Bruce turns bad into good

The weather was a bit grim and it didn't improve as the day went on. A light misty rain prevailed. The competition stats made poor reading with the field producing only one birdie all day and the second hole proving to be the most difficult with nobody making a par. There was not a lot of improvement to rounds one and two as everybody struggled.

The lone birdie went to Grant Coghill at the 13th which did improve his eclectic score but sadly Grant made a no return and failed to score on a couple of holes. Scoring was not the best and the lowest gross of 82 which indicates how poor and difficult the conditions were was shared by the veteran Fred Groves and the young apprentice Gavin Sutherland, a good effort nonetheless by both golfers.

There was a three way tie on nett 77 for the third spot shared by Gavin and Evan Sutherland and Peter McCartney. Once the dreaded countback was applied the nod went to Evan Sutherland with 86-9-77 to secure third place. Gavin was next with 82-5-77 and in fifth place was Peter McCartney with 89-12-77.

Picking up some sweep money in second spot was Fred Groves with 82-6-76 and a battling card playing as steady as he could. The best score went to Bruce Mackay using his handicap well with an ugly quadruple bogey on the 7th but holding his nerve to run out the winner with a score of 85-11-74.

Eclectic 2 - 19 November 05
Chris wins by one stroke

The second round of the winter Eclectic competition saw a frosty start and a rather cold morning but a bright fresh day with little or no wind to contend with. The course analysis was interesting throwing up 14 birdies with the 5th hole taking a battering as birdie two's dropped in for Chris Hobson, Ian Thomson, Colin Stewart and David Mackay. The hardest hole was the 7th but Lee Parnell managed a birdie two here and it should be no surprise that the 5th came in as the easiest hole.

We saw a dog fight for the lowest gross score and three players tied for this distinction led by Donald Mowat first home with a 79, and this was equalled later by Lee Parnell and Club Captain Graeme Dunnett. The man with the most birdies was David Mackay who slotted home winning putts at the 5th, 12th and the 18th but a few untidy holes put him way down the field but well in contention for the trophy which still has four rounds to go. This competition is all about birdies and David now has a few in the bag.

Steve Efemey produced a birdie at the 6th to maintain his challenge. Coming in with two birdies was Colin Stewart at the 5th and 13th as he sets out his stall for the trophy. Grant Coghill and Jim McLean also found the hole at the 6th for birdies. Lee Parnell managed a brace and as usual won't be far from the prizes as he found the cup at the tough 7th and the 12th to get on the birdie trail.

In third place was Gavin Gunn with 85-12-73 with a steady round and pushing father Alistair 82-8-74 into 4th slot by one shot. Lee Parnell tied for 4th with 79-5-74. Another often not far from the winner's podium is Donald Mowat settling for second place with figures of 79-7-72 and scoring a tidy birdie at the 10th. Grabbing first place was our old sea dog Chris Hobson with a nice putt sailing into the hole for him at the 5th for a birdie two and a very respectable card of 84-13-71 to win the second round of the eclectic.

Eclectic 1 - 15 October 05
Bruce wins after an ugly 8

The Winter Eclectic is played over six monthly rounds with the best score on the hole in the six rounds counting for the final tally in March. Round one saw a healthy field of 32 produce 11 birdies on the day and strangely the 10th hole was playing the hardest with the 9th the easiest to make par. Birdies are the name of the game in this format.

There were a few no returns but at least there are another five chances to score on the missed holes. Ian Ritchie bagged two birdies with a two at the 9th and another birdie three at the 12th. Peter McCartney never far from the prizes managed a nice birdie two at the 5th and Richard McDonald got on the birdie trail at the 16th. Jim McLean a new name in his first competitive outing this year scored with a nice birdie at the 6th.

Three players tied in third place on nett 71 and losing out on the countback was Andy Whitelaw with 84-13-71 getting fifth place. In fourth was Chris Hobson with exactly the same figures of 84-13-71 but his back 9 of 43 pushed out Andy's 44. Getting the nod for third place with 81-10-71 was Steve Efemey with nice back to back birdies at the 14th and a cheeky wee two at the 15th to cover the back 9 in 41.

In second place also with a nice brace of birdies was Donald Mowat with the best gross score of 76 who sneaked in a two at the 15th and then birdied the treacherous 17th to return a card of 76-7-69 to be the only par score of the day going out in 39 and coming home in 37. The Eclectic trail blazer is Bruce Mackay breaking par and getting off to a great start with birdies at the 2nd and 3rd to go out in 34 which is level par and good golfing. There was a serious hiccup with an ugly 8 at the 12th but Bruce will surely improve on that in the next round and setting the pace with 77-11-66 he breezed under par with a comfortable win in round one posting a magnificent nett 66. Bruce set the pace in the Summer Cup posting great early scores and is clearly at it again in the winter Eclectic but needs to maintain form to pick up the trophy in March.
