May Medal - 05 May 06
Gavin keeps the 'Gunn' name going

The May Medal was played in superb weather for most of the field with hardly a breath of wind for the early starters and a healthy breeze developing by the afternoon. The CSS was 69 and the stats showed up two Eagles and 17 Birdies with the 6th as the hardest hole followed by the 18th and the 13th playing as the easiest.

Andy Whitelaw made a good attempt at defending the Medal he won last year and finished with 85-13-72 which saw him in 6th position. Tom Sinclair had a birdie at the 13th and the Old Salt Chris Hobson sneaked in a birdie two at the 15th. Ian Ross got a great start with a birdie at the second and battled well with his 83-13-70 giving him fourth place.

A new member to the ranks this year is David J.Mowat the third D.Mowat in the club getting himself into third place with 95-26-69 and a nice steady par round. Alex Anderson was on good form shooting the lowest gross in the Division of 80 and with birdies at the 9th and 15th was looking good with 80-13-67 for the medal but had to settle for second spot. The Division Two Medal was won by Bill McIntosh playing late in the day and getting course management right for once with 84-18-66. It nearly slipped away with a very ugly 8 at the 14th and a double bogey at the 17th but a very good three at the 18th made the difference.

In Division One David Dunbar was defending the Medal and made a great effort returning the best scratch score of the day with a 74 and threw in a pair of birdies at the 13th and the 14th. David finished 74-6-68 in a four way tie for second and lost out on the countback. Murdo MacDonald had a bit of excitement on the 8th as he drilled in a 2 wood to the front of the green which hopped on and snaked straight into the hole for a wonderful eagle. Lee Parnell was another in the rarefied atmosphere in a great purple patch as he made eagle at the 13th and followed up with a birdie at the 14th in his second round of the day.

Out on the course meanwhile Alistair Gunn produced a brace of birdies going under par at the 9th with a two and the 16th for a birdie three. Jock Eunson was reminding everybody he was in the field with a fine birdie two on the 15th. David Mowat out late in the day chipped in from off the green for a birdie two at the 5th and Steve Efemey birdied the 8th. Bruce Mackay was having an unusual off day but included birdies at the 5th and the 17th.

Alan Paul 80-12-68, John Nicolson 77-9-68, Bill Budding 77-9-68 and David Dunbar 74-6-68 all tied on the second best score of nett 68 and once the headache of sorting out the count back was done John Nicolson made third and Alan Paul was awarded second place. In a class of his own with a birdie at the 8th was Gavin Gunn winning the May Medal with a great round of 76-11-65 and the reduction in handicap puts him one good round away from that elusive single figure handicap and a chance to reel in his fathers handicap of 6.
