Club Championship Qualifier 1 & Captain's Prize - 13 May 06
Cammie continues good start to season

The Captain's Prize also doubling up as the first round of the Club Championship qualifiers brought out all the fair weather golfers from their winter hibernation. The CSS for the round was 69 and young Gavin Sutherland was defending his title and expecting stiff competition. There were a total of 31 birdies with the hardest hole being the second followed by the fourth and the easiest par was the thirteenth. The 6th hole gave up seven birdies but also wrecked a few cards and there was a haul of six birdies at the thirteenth.

In Division two only one man broke par and that was Ian Mackintosh with 94-27-67. Second was Ian Sutherland on 88-18-70 and with the lowest gross in third was Grant Coghill on 83-13-70. All the extra work in the practice ground seems to be paying off for Grant. Jerry Abbott had a pair of birdies at the 6th and the 16th with Chris Hobson chipping in from off the green for a birdie at the 6th and Ian Ross making birdie at the 13th.

Scoring was considerably better in Division One with six breaking par. Alistair Gunn had two birdies at the 13th and the 16th in a strong finish. James Henderson in his first round since last year threw in three birdies at the 4th, 6th and the 14th and David Dunbar managed a pair at the 4th and the 16th. John Nicolson produced a birdie at the 17th and Bill Budding found the cup for a rare birdie at the 12th. The thirteenth gave up birdies for Bob Earnshaw, Andy Mackay and Fred Groves. Don Mackay Senior made birdie at the 16th and Grant Maxwell birdied the tough 7th.

Lee Parnell was the undoubted birdie king racking up a total of four birdies with a super scratch score of 74. The birdies came at the 3rd, 6th, 14th and 15th in a par round of 74-5-69 with the Club Championship a target and a Wilson Cup place. A great start for Lee. Richard McDonald 75-7-68 with a triple birdie haul at 6th, 11th and 13th also reminded everybody he is in contention with immaculate figures. Raymond Taylor in his first competitive round of the season cruised round in the best scratch score of 71 which is remarkable after a long winter lay off. In his round of 71-3-68 Raymond produced two birdies at the 6th and the 8th.

Three tied for second place on nett 67. When the dust settled and the countback sorted out the order second place went to a veteran campaigner in Ian Ritchie 76-9-67 and third was Colin Paterson another who was in his first competition of the new season producing a wonderful scratch score of 72. Colin strolled round in 72-5-67 with an impressive three birdies coming at the 6th, 15th and the 16th. Peter McCartney 79-12-67 had a super round and had to settle for fourth and could be a dark horse in the Club Championship. The winner of the Captain's prize on 75-9-66 was Cammie Ross winning for the second time this year and bang in contention for qualifying for the Club Championship. Cammie is having a great start to the season and playing well.
