Club Championship & Monthly Medals - Season 2006-2007
Club Championship Qualifier 2 & Reay School PTA Open -
20 May 06
There was an excellent entry for this event sponsored by Currie & Brown of Dounreay. The weather was kind and the Club was able to present a cheque for £100 to the PTA from the event. The cheque was presented by Lee Parnell the master of ceremonies to Eisleen Sutherland the Head Teacher at the successful social evening with live music from 'Clapshot'. We were delighted to have Julie Murray the Chief Executive from the sponsors Currie & Brown to present the winners prizes and round off an excellent day of competition. Course statistics showed a CSS of 69 with a total of 35 birdies. No surprise to find the second playing the hardest and the 13th was the easiest par to make giving up 4 birdies. The 16th was plundered for 7 birdies, and the 15th and 6th gave up six birdies each. There was an extra edge for Reay members as their scores counted towards qualification for the Club Championships. Lynne Whitelaw was in outstanding form in the Ladies section with 93-25-68 to win very comfortably and claim the title for the third year in a row and create a new record. Congratulations to Lynne who set out very determined to win and to do it three times is an excellent achievement. Runner up was Carole Cameron on 86-13-73. In the Junior Section young Hugh Tunn was victorious with 92-33-59 a great score. Allyn Sutherland was second with 99-34-65 and in third we had Struan Mackie with a 106-36-70. In Division Two Brian Suttar of the Thurso Club had a nice birdie two at the 15th and Steve Lucas made birdie at the 14th. Alec Anderson also managed a two at the 15th. Kenny Chalmers from Thurso was on good form returning two birdies with nice putts at the 13th and the 16th for 83-13-70 and fourth spot. In third place with a fine birdie two at the seventh was Bill McIntosh with 87-18-69 for a par round spoiled by three double bogeys over the last three holes. The lowest gross of 82 went to Jerry Abbott carding 82-16-66 in a fine round his best since joining Reay this season. Jerry also puts himself into a strong position for the Handicap section of the Club Championship qualifiers. Winning Division two was Andy Costello of the Thurso Golf Club with 86-21-65 and of course we had to look closely at this pair to make sure they were not a 'double act'. Division one followed Division two with some outstanding scores and some outstanding birdies. Richard McDonald crashed in three birdies at the 7th, 8th and the 18th and gets into contention for the Club Championships with a gross 79. Bill Budding made a two at the 5th and there were birdies at the 6th for John Nicolson, Bruce Mackay and Ronnie Matheson of Thurso. Big Murray McGlasson from Thurso tamed the fourth with a fine birdie and Cammie Ross made a birdie at the 16th. There was also a two at the 15th for Murdo MacDonald. Young Brent Munro produced a scratch 79 and is trying for the Club Championships at both Thurso and Reay as he tries to grab both titles and get his handicap low enough for a Golf Scholarship. We wish the young fellow a lot of luck in the future and he is already in a qualifying spot for Reay with two rounds to go. Alistair Gunn had a fine par round of 75-6-69 which included a great start with a birdie two at the first. Scott MacDonald of Thurso had a 76-7-69 also finishing with par figures. Three tied on nett 68 and were the seasoned campaigner Ian Ritchie on 77-9-68, Colin Paterson 73-5-68 with a birdie at the 6th and a second great score for the Club Championship. David Dunbar the reigning Club Champion began the defence of his title with 74-6-68 throwing in birdies at the 6th and the 16th. Steve Cowie 73-6-67 of the Thurso GC got into the prizes sinking birdies at the 6th and the 8th in a fine round. Don Mackay Jnr was in sparkling form and he had to be after a poor round by his standards in the first qualifier and made the best scratch score of the day a 68 which included a very impressive haul of four birdies at the 4th, 12th, 13th and the 16th and his 68-2-66 only made fourth place. Don leaps into pole position for qualifying for the Club Championships and his target is that coveted title of Club Champion. Also tied on nett 66 but with the better back 9 was John O'Brien 72-6-66 for third place and a nice pair of birdies at the 15th and 16th. The title was a great dog fight between Steve Efemey of Reay and Andy MacGregor of Thurso both locked together on nett 65 being four under par. Alan shot 76-11-65 with a birdie at the 15th and had to settle for second place as he had no chance in the countback. Andy Costello from Division two also had a nett 65 and he too was not in contention in the countback. Steve Efemey 75-10-65 simply had an outstanding back nine being two under gross as he crashed home with four birdies starting at the 10th, then the 13th, 16th and the grandstand finish with a birdie two at the last to win the countback convincingly and snatch the title of Reay School PTA Champion for 2006. This was a very fine victory and Steve has been threatening a winning score for some time.
