Club Championship Qualifier 3 & Dunnett Cup - 04 June 06
Bill is comfortable Cup winner

The Dunnett Cup doubling up as a Club Championship Qualifier brought out a larger than normal field in search of much gold to quote Peter Alliss a well known BBC commentator. The CSS stood at 69 and the stats showed a grand total of 22 birdies with the 14th giving up 6 birdies, the easiest par was the 5th and no surprise to find the 2nd as the hardest hole followed by the dreaded 17th.

In division two Alec Anderson made birdie at the 18th in a grandstand finish to his round. Steve Lucas with 83-13-70 made third place his own and with a birdie at the 14th Sandy Chisholm 82-13-69 took second place. The comfortable winner was Bill McIntosh 81-19-62 going out in 39 and back in 42 with the lowest gross score of 81. This score has been hovering for a while and if you can course manage and keep the big numbers off the card then scores follow along with the chop in the handicap.

In Division one it was great to see Club Captain, Graeme Dunnett in action after a long lay off following an operation on his hand and even better to see a gross 71 which puts him bang into contention for the Club Championship. Graeme shot 71-1-70 going out in 36 and home in 35 with a birdie at the 16th as some icing on the cake and hopefully back in action in time for the Wilson Cup.

Murdo MacDonald was excelling himself on the course and was delighted to bag three birdies at the 5th, 13th and 15th and looking for a spot in the Seniors Championship. Grant Maxwell made birdie at the 14th, and Don Mackay Snr at the 15th. Brent Munro maintained his challenge with a birdie at the 5th and Gavin Gunn had a pair breaking par at the 13th and the 14th. Peter McCartney is on track with a birdie at the 17th and lurking in the wings as a dark horse for qualifying.

Three tied on nett 69 and they were Bob Earnshaw 80-11-69, John O'Brien 74-5-69 with a birdie at the 14th and Lee Parnell 74-5-69. Four tied for the 4th best score of nett 67 and all pitching at the Club Championship. Evan Sutherland 77-10-67 started with a superb birdie at the first, David Dunbar the current Club Champion 72-5-67 making birdie at the 14th appears to be comfortably qualified and with an eye on Wilson Cup selection is in great form just now. Richard McDonald 74-7-67 put in yet another good round and is worth a good bet. Ian Ross 79-12-67 with a classy birdie at the third is another who could surprise a few.

Following up his excellent 68 in the last qualifier Don Mackay Jnr 68-2-66 did it again and is very comfortable in the top qualifying position shooting the lowest gross with birdies at the 11th, 13th, 14th and 16th found the greens very much to his liking and is looking to put a big effort into grabbing the Title. Don was out in 37 a bit untidy but came home with four birdies in a total of 31 shots to post a second 68 and took third in the Dunnett Cup.

Gavin Sutherland 70-6-64 made his mark with a birdie at the 4th and put up a great round of 70 and was second on countback to John Nicolson. With a nice 73, John Nicolson 73-9-64 made birdie at the 16th to be top man in Division One and also needs another good round to be sure of making the finals as there are a lot of players grouped together and only 12 make the finals. The foxy old Club Secretary had the last laugh taking the Dunnett Cup with a real bandit's score of 62 and is grateful for a lot of good fortune in a round where he scrambled well and was grateful the rough was kind and his power fade made a fairway even if it wasn't the one he aimed at.
