Mens Tournaments - Season 2006-2007

George Coupar Challenge Shield - 08 April 06
Alistair beats on form Bruce

It was cold but conditions were excellent apart from one horrid squall which blasted across the course and everybody got the benefit of it. The CSS was 69 and the stats showed only 9 birdies with the 2nd playing the hardest and the 15th the easiest. It was a particularly big entry and only 9 birdies all day was disappointing particularly when Evan Sutherland made three on his own at the 9th, 13th and the 15th. The rest of the field only made 6 birdies so the cool temperature was having an effect.

Division two was won by Tom Sinclair (18) with a total of 34 points; the only birdie went to David Mowat a new member to the club at the 6th hole. Five players tied for second on 31 points and these were Steve Lucas (13), Keith Buxton (20), Bill McIntosh (18), Willie Williamson (21) and Ian Ross (13) in the order as sorted by the countback.

In Division One Andy Mackay had a birdie at the 16th and Andy Bain made birdie at the 13th. Grant Maxwell (7) continued his comeback settling into the groove nicely on 35 points getting a great start with a birdie at the 1st and another at the long 4th. Three players had to be separated on 37 points and when the dust settled it was Gavin Sutherland (5) who had the best back 9 to take third place and the sweep money. Losing out at 4th was Grant Coghill (12) who had a birdie at the 14th and Colin Stewart (12) was relegated to 5th. Murdo MacDonald the trophy holder faded away down the field and lost two trophies in a week unable to successfully defend either.

The runner up, a familiar name and still in good form was Bruce Mackay (9) making a good 38 points which is 2 under par and a fine round. With a massive 40 points and a more than comfortable win came Alistair Gunn (8) hot on the heels of son Gavin who won the Ward Trophy. Its all Gunn's blazing. Alistair had a great round with equal halves of 20 points and a score which equates to four under par and a well deserved victory. The Gunn family have a stranglehold on the trophies at present.
