The weather was very cold and it certainly didn't feel like summer with an icy breeze. The field was a bit depleted as a few of our regular worthies had a tilt at the County Championships in Thurso. This was a new format never played at Reay before and the twist to the usual Greensomes format is that the poorest tee shot is the one selected. There was a lot of gamesmanship going on and provisional balls being played as players got into the tactics of Gruesomes and scoring is tough so low scores are not expected, a lot of tactical thinking is required.
Third place was taken by Grant Coghill and Craig Somerville combining well to get a gross 90. There is a formula for sorting out a combined handicap and Grant and Craig carded 90-16.2-73.8 which is a sound performance for gruesomes. Donald Mowat and Grant Maxwell both playing of 8 secured a birdie at the 14th and their combined effort produced another worthy score of 80-8-72.
The runaway winners were Fred Groves and Andy Mackay with a great birdie at the third. Fred's ball was selected as the poorest off the tee but it must have been pretty good anyway as Andy Mackay stuck the second shot to within three feet and Fred rolled in the putt for birdie. Fred and Andy carded 77-9-68 a great score considering the format and both must have been playing well off the tee to be able to record such a good score in gruesomes and not give their opponent's much opportunity to put them in difficult positions.
