A large entry of 52 juniors from the local golf clubs and clubs outside the county, including one junior from Belgium, turned out to contest this year's junior open held at Reay Golf Club on Sunday 13 August. After a rainy start the weather cleared to make conditions a little more bearable for the younger members. Once again the junior section are grateful to sponsors Inbis, ARC Consulting, D C Mowat, Bank of Scotland, O'Brien Construction, Mrs Janette Wallace, Royal Bank of Scotland ,W & D Ross Painters , Thor Fishing and Highland Travel Inns Limited. As a result of this sponsorship every player received a prize. This year there was a new competition for the very youngest players - the Tichy Tigers - played over one hole. The three players, Nicole Ross, Connor Ross and James Tunn, all scored 5 and were therefore equal first. The Fairway Ferrets section was contested over three holes and resulted in a superb win for James Hawes by two shots from Ruari McCartney and Scott Ross with Ronan Kennedy and Lauren Ross close on their heels. James won the Dunnett Shield for the best gross and Lauren the 3 Hole Cup for best girl. Fourteen players contested the Birdie Baggers section played over six holes. Stuart Adamson had a three shot advantage over the chasing pack of Lindsey Parsonage, Shane Kennedy, Keenan McIvor, Andrew Adamson, Eleanor Tunn and Natasha Morris who were only separated by four shots. Stuart won the Alex and Don Mackay Shield and Lindsey collected the J Wallace Trophy as best girl. With the biggest entry yet competition for the boys playing 18 holes off the junior tees resulted in some very close scoring with Cameron McHardie from Strathpeffer pipping Mark Parsonage by three shots to win the section and the Begg Cup. One shot covered the next six players which included Ranald Stewart, Greg Forsyth, Ian Stewart, Hugh Tunn, Allyn Sutherland and Struan Mackie. In the main competition, Gavin Sutherland from the home club won the Reay Junior Open with a fine gross 76 off the medal tees. In the handicap section Brian Soutar just beat Chris Maycock and Amury Demour by virtue of his better inward half. Gavin was presented with the AEA Technology Cup by Reay Golf Club Captain Graeme Dunnett who also presented Brian Soutar with the Northern Heating Controls Cup for the best nett score. The girl's section was won by Rebecca Meiklejohn from Thurso with a fine nett 77. During the prize giving tribute was paid to the fact that no less than three club champions in Caithness are juniors; Gavin Sutherland at Reay, Brent Munro at Thurso and Alan Larnach at Lybster which must auger well for the future of golf in the north.
