It was the second playing of the Ronnie Wallace trophy and nice to see so many friends from Thurso GC come out to Reay and make an effort to contest the trophy. Thurso golfers did very well at Reay last year and this was the first chance to grab prizes this year. Conditions were very tough as last year and the wind was up making the course very difficult as the CSS testifies being at 71, nevertheless there were 23 birdies. No surprise to find the fourth as the hardest hole followed by the second and the 5th playing the easiest.
Division two golfers were in trouble and having a hard day at the office with 15 no returns and only three birdies. Sid Campbell from Thurso GC made birdie two at the short 5th and Alex Mackay of Reay made two birdies at the 13th and the 18th. Alex Mackay was having a great day getting the lowest gross of 90 and winning the nearest the pin at the 18th. Alex hit the first shot of the day into the 18th and nailed to 3 feet and nobody got near him all day.
James Lynch of the Thurso GC took third place with 91-16-75 and also from Thurso Jack Johnstone secured second with 93-19-74. Top of the tree was Alex Mackay of Reay with his lowest gross on 90-17-73 for a popular win.
It was hard going in Division one as well as eleven failed to return a score. John O'Brien made birdie at the 10th and Lee Parnell and Donald Mowat birdied the 12th. J.Meiklejohn of Thurso bagged a double with birdies at the 9th and the 14th. Ron Matheson was one of three players on the lowest scratch score of 76 along with young guns Brent Munro and Gavin Sutherland. Ron birdied the 14th, Gavin Gunn the 6th and Andy Bain the 18th.
David Mackay defending the trophy made a good attempt to retain the title on 79-7-72 with a nice pair of birdies at the 14th and the 15th. Aly Mackay making a welcome visit from Wick found a birdie at the 6th. There were 5 players tied with the second best score of nett 71 and these were Aly Mackay 77-6-71, Gavin Sutherland 76-5-71, Brent Munro 76-5-71, Wayne Mowat 77-6-71, and Cammie Ross 80-9-71. The nearest the pin at the short 5th was won by Jock Eunson at about 6 feet and he missed the putt only making par.
Gavin Sutherland had three birdies at the 5th, 13th and the 15th in his total and Brent Munro of Thurso GC put his over wintering at Reay to good use also banging in three birdies at the 6th, 14th and 15th and settling for fourth place. It was nice to see Brent get Best Gross as he has been threatening a score at Reay for a while. With a birdie at the 10th Wayne Mowat picked up the third place and also with a birdie at the 13th Cammie Ross won the countback to get the runner up berth.
The winner who has been in very good form this year was Colin Stewart of Reay GC with a score of 82-12-70 and finishing with a grandstand birdie at the 18th to cheers from the watching gallery.
