The course was in outstanding condition giving up a total of 16 birdies for the Ward Trophy. The CSS was 69 for the competition so it was a good test of golf as the early season takes shape at Reay. The 7th hole was the toughest and the 13th with three birdies was the easiest.
Don Mackay senior was in fine form as he rattled in two birdie two's at the 5th and the tough 7th. Also on a brace of birdies was Colin Stewart with a very impressive opening birdie two at the first hole where most are happy with a drive somewhere near the green. Colin had a birdie at the 13th later in his round. Neil McDonald getting an early start impressed with three birdies at the 4th, 6th and the 17th and made 33 points in a creditable start to his season.
Elsewhere Gavin Sutherland had a birdie at the 13th and Donald Mowat sneaked in a two at the short 15th which has a treacherous green which is never easy to read. Alistair Gunn also had a birdie at the 13th, Lee Parnell birdied the long 4th and Grant Maxwell making a very welcome comeback to competitive golf celebrated with a fine birdie at the 10th.
Bruce Mackay (9) shot 36 points for 4th place and edged out Murdo MacDonald (11) the trophy holder into 5th place also on 36 points by the dreaded countback. Murdo made an excellent job of defending the trophy and Bruce had a terrific birdie on the second which is no mean feat. Second place also needed the countback to separate Steve Efemey (10) and Alf Mackay (12) who were both on 37 points but Steve Efemey had the better back 9 to claim second and Alf had to settle for third.
The Winner of the Ward Trophy celebrating recently becoming a dad was Gavin Gunn (12) who was more than a comfortable winner with an outstanding 41 Stableford points. Gavin also had the satisfaction of three birdies in his round in a superb finish to his round with the birdies coming at the 14th, 15th and 17th.
