Club Championship & Monthly Medals - Season 2007-2008
August Medal -
04 August 07
To say the wind was howling would be an understatement as conditions were more than tough. The CSS for the Medal was 72 and with the direction the wind was blowing in from the West it was no surprise to find the 17th and 18th as the hardest holes even although the 18th gave up two birdies in a very testing finish. The 5th hole as usual was the easiest par and there were a grand total of 13 birdies. In Division two where Billy Dunbar was defending the Medal life was certainly tough with 9 players making a nil return. Battling away in third was Bill McIntosh 97-19-78 running up a very ugly 9 on the 14th and having to play a third ball off the tee on the 18th to blow a good score in two holes. Andy Bain 87-14-73 had the lowest gross and was second despite a seven on the first and a seven on the 16th to lose out on a medal. Winning his second monthly Medal was Tony Wratten 99-27-72 having picked up the July Medal. Tony had a gritty round with a big ten at the 13th followed by a birdie to compensate at the 14th again proving that getting a card in when conditions are tough gives you a chance to win. Everybody struggles on a day like this and a score of any kind will have a chance.
There was a disaster for Bob Earnshaw with 80-10-70 which was the winning score including birdies at the 12th and the 16th which were particularly good into the teeth of the wind. Sadly Bob and playing partner John Disbury signed the wrong cards reminiscent of mark Roe at the Open and both had to be disqualified. Murdo MacDonald in Division one made birdie at the 18th. Club Captain Ian Ross had an adventure on the 4th with his tee shot landing on the 6th fairway, and then putting his next shot out of bounds. Ian at least had the consolation of a birdie on the 18th as a bit of gloss on the round. Evan Sutherland made a good birdie at the 13th into the wind. Three players tied for third spot on nett 73. Once the countback was applied third was awarded to David Mackay 80-7-73 with a classy birdie at the 14th. Alec Anderson was fourth on 82-9-73 and liked the par 5's making birdie at the 6th and the 14th. Jock Eunson 84-11-73 birdying the 13th had a great tilt at the medal but lost out due to a couple of untidy sevens on the card. Donald Mowat 80-8-72 cracked in a super birdie at 6th helping him recover from an ugly 8 on the 4th and played very steady golf to finish the back nine in 37 for second place and nearly got the medal. The star man winning the August Medal was Grant Maxwell 78-7-71 with the lowest gross of 78 and a pair of birdies at the 2nd and the 14th. Grant again found the front nine difficult to handle going out in 40 but came home in 38 to pick up his fifth trophy this season in the most difficult of conditions.
