July Medal - 21 July 07
Evan and Tony top of the class

The July Medal threw up a few surprises particularly as the weather was fine for golfing. The stats showed the CSS to be 69 and unusually the fourteenth was playing the hardest par with the 11th the easiest par normally a very troublesome hole. Although conditions were excellent there were only ten birdies.

Grant Coghill in division two made a pair of birdies at the 11th and the 15th but that was not enough to recover from a very ugly nine at the 4th and a 7 at the 2nd which was too much ground to make up. Kenny Farmer had a sparkling birdie two at the 5th but a pair of 7's on the back nine spoiled a good medal chance.

Fresh back from being offshore Tom Sinclair was right in about the sweep money. Tom shot 89-18-71 but lost out in the countback and had to settle for third place. Tom nevertheless had the best gross of 89 in the division. Liam Bremner making a rare appearance was the man who edged out Tom with 94-23-71 to secure second place. Tony Wratten 96-28-68 will be delighted to find out he won the Division two Medal and was the only man to break par to pick up his first Trophy at Reay.

In Division one there was a customary birdie at the 4th for Brad Smith who had a bit of an off day at the office. Also not firing on all cylinders was Jock Eunson who still managed a great birdie two at the 9th hole. Grant Maxwell 80-7-73 blew a great opportunity to win the medal by running up a horrendous 9 at the fifth and followed it up with an 8 at the 6th. Grant is a gritty customer and rolled the sleeves up immediately making birdie at the 8th to be out in 46. The back nine was a different story as three birdies fell at the 11th, 14th and 18th in a great comeback finishing in 34 which is gross par. What a great finish to the round when many would have torn the card up and it's a lesson for all those that no return.

No less than four shared second spot and the dreaded countback was working overtime to sort them out. Second was awarded to Bob Earnshaw 80-9-71, third to Gavin Sutherland 76-5-71, fourth to Pete McCartney 83-12-71 and finally Gavin Gunn 80-9-71. The Medal went to Evan Sutherland 75-8-67 in a near flawless round going out in 37 and home in 38 for a total 75 which was the lowest scratch score and a birdie at the 13th to emphasise his superiority over the field. It was interesting to note that Gavin Sutherland and Tom Sinclair who were both defending their medal wins from last year both came third.
