Club Championship & Monthly Medals - Season 2007-2008
Club Championship Rnd 1 & Captain's Prize -
12 May 07
Conditions were difficult as the CSS of 71 showed the course playing two shots over par; however, some scores that were produced were very good. This doubled up as the first round of the Club Championships and there were a load of No Returns which means the pressure is on and two scores have to be posted with only two rounds left. Some of the fancied players struggled badly and at the moment won't qualify so there is much to do. No surprise to find the second playing the hardest and the 5th the easiest with a grand total of 17 Birdies. In Division two the top four scored really well but the rest of the field were disappointing. In fourth with the lowest gross in the Division was Pete McCartney 81-13-68 missing out on the countback. Peter is right in the thick of it for qualification for the Club Championship. David O'Brien 89-2-68 in his first round of the season picked up third place. Young Allyn Sutherland with 86-21-65 is right in contention for Club Championship qualification with a super score and the added bonus of the grandstand birdie two at the 18th. Allyn's score put him into second place. The outright winner in Division two was David J.Mowat with a great score of 86-23-63 and his grasp nearly on the Captain's Prize. Murray McGlasson in Division 1 made birdie on the 6th but ran out of steam as did Steve Efemey with a birdie two at the 15th. Don Mackay (Jnr) only interested in Club Championship qualification shot a gross 76 in a good start and made birdie at the 6th. There were birdie two's for Murdo MacDonald and Ian Ritchie at the short 5th with Don Mackay (Snr) making birdie at the 16th. John O'Brien gets comfortably into qualification with a scratch 77 and a birdie at the 14th. Lee Parnell is also hovering with a scratch 75 and a pair of birdies at the 4th and the 13th. Some of the favourites like Graeme Dunnett, Raymond Taylor and Grant Maxwell really need to improve in the next two rounds or they wont be making the cut causing a major upset on the side bets. They are in a group of 9 on 81 and 82 and the score for 7th qualifying spot is 81 so still all to play for. In fourth place was Donald Mowat (Mojo) with a lovely birdie two at the 9th to be a contender for qualification. Colin Paterson always a safe bet for qualification didn't disappoint with a 71 and had birdies at the 4th and 13th for figures of 71-5-66 to be second seed at present. It was always going to happen from a man who has pegged up in the U.S.Open and Brad Smith at last seems to have got to grips with the Reay Links. Out in 34 with birdies at the 3rd and 5th with dropped shots at the 1st and 7th a good score was on the cards. Birdies at the 11th and 17th brought Brad home in 33 for a new course record score of 67. Final figures of 67-4-63 equalled David J.Mowat's nett 63 but on the countback the prize goes to Brad Smith by a half shot.
