Club Championship & Monthly Medals - Season 2007-2008
Club Championship Rnd 2 & Rotary Club -
26 May 07
This was eventually replayed after the original date was abandoned after bad weather however the weather was still quite poor and unpleasant with a very stiff breeze from the west. There were a grand total of 21 birdies with the 6th giving up 6 and the 14th giving up five but of course both were downwind which helped. The easiest par was the 5th and the hardest the 4th playing into the teeth of the wind. The CSS was 69. In the ladies section there were only seven entries all being from Thurso GC apart from Sophie Dunnett from Reay. Sophie put in a good round and took third spot with figures of 106-27-79 to get on the podium. Anne Simmonite of Thurso was second by just one shot getting round the course in 97-19-78. The clear winner with a one over par round of 89-18-71 was Rebecca Meiklejohn of Thurso GC. In Division two Kenny Farmer birdied the 3rd and settled for fourth slot on countback with 87-15-72. Club Captain Ian Ross had the lowest gross of 85 and his figures of 85-13-72 made him third in the Division. Donald Mackay came close with 97-26-71 after the countback and was relegated to second as Willie Williamson triumphed with 91-20-71 to be the Division two winner. In Division one the 14th was birdied by Steve Efemey, Colin Stewart, Colin Paterson and Richard McDonald. Grant Maxwell made a two at the 15th and Don Mackay had a birdie at the 10th with Bruce Mackay and Alec Anderson on the birdie trail at the 6th. It was a bit unique to have the lowest scratch score shared by no less than five with a 75. These were Graeme Dunnett, Lee Parnell, Raymond Taylor, Neil McDonald and Gavin Sutherland. Graeme won the Competition for the Rotarians. Lee Parnell had two birdies at the 6th and 14th in his 75. David Mackay made birdie at the 16th and Raymond Taylor showed he hasn't forgotten how to do it with a nice pair of birdies at the 6th and the 10th. Second place was a real bun fight as six tied on nett 71 so the poor old Secretary had a nightmare job sorting out the countback and the final placing. Third place went to John Nicolson 77-6-71 with birdies at the 6th and the 13th. Neil McDonald making an all too rare appearance these days had a two at the 15th to return figures of 75-4-71 for second. Winning Division one was Jim Meiklejohn 79-8-71 of Thurso GC with a two at the 5th and a second birdie at the 16th. The Rotary Club Open Champion for 2007 getting his name on the trophy for the second time having won in 2004 was Reay Golf Club Champion Gavin Sutherland with a sparkling 75-5-70 which included a brace of birdies at the 6th and the 13th. Graeme Dunnett from the Rotary Club presented Gavin Sutherland with the trophy and also presented the Club with a handsome cheque for development at the Club.
